Convert 3GP to OGA Online

A .3gp file is a 3GPP mobile container — video plus a speech or music track recorded on older phones. A .oga file is the opposite: an audio-only Ogg container, usually holding Vorbis. This converter extracts the audio stream from your 3GP, discards the video, and re-encodes it into an open, royalty-free Ogg file.

Because the audio inside a 3GP is already compressed (typically AMR speech or low-bitrate AAC), this is a lossy-to-lossy transcode — Ogg keeps the file small and license-free, but it cannot recover detail the original recording never had. If broad device playback matters more than open formats, convert to MP3 instead.

3GP Format at a Glance

Property Value
Standard 3GPP TS 26.244 (built on ISO/IEC 14496-12, the MPEG-4 base media format)
First specified April 2003
Video codecs H.263, MPEG-4 Part 2, H.264/AVC
Audio codecs AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AAC-LC, HE-AAC
Typical source Older mobile phones, MMS clips, voice recordings
Audio fidelity AMR is narrowband speech (~8 kHz); AAC clips are usually low-bitrate

OGA (Ogg Audio) at a Glance

Property Value
Container Ogg, from the Xiph.Org Foundation
Common codec Vorbis (Opus and FLAC also valid in .oga)
Compression Lossy (Vorbis), royalty-free and open-source
Released Vorbis stabilized in the early 2000s; spec is public domain
Native browser support Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera; not natively on Safari / iOS
Best for Open-source projects, web/game audio, license-free distribution

How to Convert 3GP to OGA

  1. Upload Your 3GP File: Drag and drop your .3gp or .3g2 file, or click "+ Add Files." You can queue several clips and convert them with the same settings.
  2. Set the Quality Preset: Choose the output quality from the Quality Preset dropdown, or open File Compression to set a Constant, Variable, or Custom Bitrate. Higher bitrate cannot add fidelity beyond the source, so matching the original (around 96–128 kbps for AAC sources) avoids wasting space.
  3. Adjust Audio Channel or Sample Rate: Leave Audio Channel and Audio Sample Rate on "Original" to preserve the source, or downmix to Mono and lower the sample rate for speech-only voice notes. Use Trim if you only need part of the clip.
  4. Convert and Download: Click "Convert" and download your .oga file. Files are uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours — no sign-up, no watermark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will converting 3GP to OGA improve the audio quality?

No. The audio inside a 3GP is already compressed — usually AMR speech or low-bitrate AAC — so re-encoding to Vorbis is a lossy-to-lossy step. It can keep the size small and make the file open and license-free, but it cannot restore detail that was never recorded. Match the output bitrate to the source rather than inflating it.

Why is my converted speech recording still low-fidelity?

If the 3GP was a phone voice note, the original audio is almost certainly AMR narrowband, captured at roughly 8 kHz for speech. That ceiling carries through to the OGA no matter what bitrate you pick. Ogg encodes it faithfully, but it is bounded by what AMR captured.

Does my OGA file play everywhere MP3 does?

Not quite. Ogg Vorbis plays natively in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, VLC, and most open-source players, but it is not natively supported on Safari or iOS and needs a plugin in some legacy players. For the widest device compatibility, convert your 3GP to MP3 instead.

What codec is inside the .oga file this produces?

By default the Ogg container is filled with Vorbis, the open lossy codec from Xiph.Org. The .oga extension can also carry Opus or FLAC; .ogg and .oga are largely interchangeable, with .oga signaling an audio-only stream.

My 3GP has no sound — why is the OGA silent?

Some 3GP clips are video-only or have a muted/empty audio track. Since this tool extracts the existing audio stream, a 3GP with no audio produces a silent or empty OGA. Play the source first to confirm it actually has sound.

Can I extract just part of a long 3GP recording?

Yes. Expand the Trim control and set a start time and duration to export only the segment you need. The rest of the clip is left out of the OGA, which keeps the file smaller.

Is the conversion private and free?

Yes. In our testing a 60-second AMR voice note converts to a Vorbis OGA of roughly 0.5–1 MB in a few seconds. Files are uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours. There is no sign-up, no watermark, and your files are never shared or made public.
