How to Convert Audio to M4R Online
- Upload Your Audio Files: Drag and drop or click "+ Add Files". MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus, WMA, AIFF, AMR, CAF and other common audio formats are accepted, and one batch can mix formats.
- Trim to Ringtone Length: In Advanced Options, open Trim. Enter the Start time where the clip should begin (seconds such as
45.2, orHH:MM:SS.sss) and a Duration of 30 seconds or less. The note under Duration repeats Apple's guidance that iPhone ringtones can be up to 30 seconds long. - Fine-Tune the Output (Optional): AAC is the only Audio Codec for M4R. File Compression offers a Quality Preset, Constant Bitrate (8-384 kbps), Variable Bitrate (five AAC bands, 20k-32k up to 96k-112k), Custom Bitrate in kbps, or a target file size. Audio Channel switches between Original, Mono and Stereo, and Audio Sample Rate between Original, 44100 Hz, 48000 Hz and other rates.
- Convert and Download: Click "Convert". Files are uploaded over HTTPS, converted on xconvert's servers and deleted automatically after a few hours. Download each
.m4ron its own or the whole batch as a ZIP. No sign-up, no watermark.
Why Convert Audio to M4R?
iPhone custom ringtones use one file type: M4R, which is AAC (AAC-LC) audio in an MPEG-4 container with the .m4r extension. It is the same container and codec as M4A; the extension is how iOS, the Finder and iTunes recognize a file as a tone. Whatever your clip started life as (a WhatsApp voice note in Opus, a WAV bounce from a music app, a FLAC from Bandcamp, a WMA from an old Windows library, an AMR recording from an older phone) it has to become AAC in an .m4r file before an iPhone will offer it as a ringtone.
This page is the catch-all route: any common audio format in, M4R out. It is the right choice when:
- Your files are in mixed formats. A folder with a WAV, two MP3s and an OGG converts in one batch with the same settings.
- You are not sure what the file is. Voice notes and recorder files often carry unfamiliar extensions such as
.opus,.oga,.amror.caf. You do not need to know which codec is inside; the converter decodes the stream and encodes fresh AAC. - The clip is longer than a ringtone. Trimming happens in the same step, so you choose which 30 seconds play.
What to expect depends on the source. Lossless audio (WAV, AIFF, FLAC) goes through a single AAC encode and gives the cleanest result. Lossy audio (MP3, OGG, Opus, WMA) gets a second lossy pass, so keep the bitrate at or above the source. Speech codecs such as AMR were built for phone calls and are already narrowband, so a low bitrate in Mono loses nothing you would hear. If you know your format, the dedicated pages explain the details: MP3 to M4R and WAV to M4R cover the two most common sources.
M4R vs Other Ringtone Formats
| Property | M4R | M4A | MP3 | OGG (Vorbis) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Codec | AAC-LC | AAC (or ALAC) | MP3 | Vorbis |
| Container | MPEG-4, .m4r |
MPEG-4, .m4a |
MP3 stream | Ogg |
| Listed as an iPhone ringtone | Yes | Only after conversion or renaming to .m4r |
No | No |
| Android ringtone | Not needed | Plays on most phones | Common choice | Common choice |
| Length for iPhone | Up to 30 seconds (Apple) | n/a | n/a | n/a |
| Typical origin | Converted clips for iPhone | Voice Memos, iTunes purchases | Downloads, CD rips | Android sounds, games |
What Happens to Each Source Format
| Source | Where it usually comes from | Converting to M4R |
|---|---|---|
| MP3 | Downloads, CD rips, podcasts | Second lossy pass; match the MP3 bitrate |
| WAV / AIFF | Music apps, field recorders, sound libraries | Lossless source, one AAC encode |
| FLAC | Bandcamp, CD rips, hi-res stores | Lossless source; pick 44100 or 48000 Hz for hi-res files |
| M4A / AAC | Voice Memos, iTunes, Android recorders | Same codec family; often only the length needs fixing |
| OGG / Opus | WhatsApp, Telegram and Discord voice notes | Lossy to lossy; speech is fine in Mono |
| AMR | Older phone and call recordings | Narrowband speech; 64 kbps Mono is plenty |
| WMA | Old Windows Media libraries | Lossy to lossy; match the source bitrate |
A 30-second M4R is small at any setting: bitrate (kbps) × 30 ÷ 8 gives about 480 KB at 128 kbps and about 960 KB at 256 kbps.
How to Set It as Your Ringtone on iPhone
The usual ways to get the .m4r onto the phone:
- Mac (macOS Catalina or later): connect the iPhone, select it in the Finder sidebar and drag the
.m4ronto it. - Windows: connect the iPhone and add the tone to it in iTunes.
- iPhone only: save the file to Files, import it into GarageBand on the iPhone and choose Share > Ringtone. This is Apple's documented route; the audio must not be DRM-protected, and GarageBand shortens a ringtone over 30 seconds automatically on export (Apple Support).
Then pick it under Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone (iPhone User Guide). For a single person, open Contacts, choose the contact, tap Edit and set Ringtone or Text Tone.
Ringtone for Android?
Android does not use M4R; its ringtones are usually MP3 or OGG. Use Audio to MP3 instead and copy the file to your phone's Ringtones folder or pick it in the sound settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which audio formats can I convert to M4R here?
MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, M4B, AAC, OGG, OGA, Opus, WMA, AIFF, AIF, AIFC, AMR, AU, CAF, AC3, DSS, VOC, WEBA, and M4R itself. Each file is decoded and re-encoded as AAC in an .m4r file.
Do I have to convert, or can I just rename the file to .m4r?
Renaming only works for an M4A that already holds AAC audio, because M4R is that same container and codec with a different extension. Every other format (MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC and so on) holds different audio data, and renaming it produces a file iOS will not treat as a valid ringtone. Converting also lets you trim to 30 seconds in the same step.
How long should the ringtone be?
30 seconds or less. Apple's support article says ringtones can be up to 30 seconds long. A 40-second figure circulates from the iTunes era, but it is not in Apple's current documentation, so 30 seconds is the safe target.
What bitrate should I pick?
For music, 128-192 kbps AAC is plenty for a phone speaker, and 256 kbps if the source is lossless and you want headroom. For speech, 64-96 kbps in Mono. Do not go far below the source bitrate, and remember that going above it cannot restore detail a lossy source already lost.
Can a WhatsApp or Telegram voice note become a ringtone?
Yes. Voice notes are usually Opus audio in an .ogg or .opus file. Upload it, trim the part you want, switch Audio Channel to Mono if you like, and convert. Speech-only clips sound fine at low bitrates.
Are my files private?
Processing is server-side. Files are uploaded over TLS (HTTPS), converted on xconvert's servers and deleted automatically after a few hours. There is no account and nothing is added to your audio.
I already have an M4R. Can I turn it back into another format?
Yes. The M4R Converter converts M4R ringtones to MP3, WAV, M4A and other audio formats.
