Make an iPhone Ringtone from AVCHD Camcorder Footage

AVCHD is the high-definition camcorder format Sony and Panasonic introduced in 2006: H.264 video and a Dolby Digital (AC-3) or Linear PCM soundtrack, multiplexed into an MPEG-2 transport stream. A lot of the sounds people want on their phone were caught on exactly this kind of camera: a child's first laugh, a toast at a wedding, a dog that howls along to the piano. This page takes an AVCHD clip, drops the video, and re-encodes the soundtrack to AAC inside an .m4r file, the extension an iPhone uses for custom ringtones. M4R is the same MPEG-4 container and AAC-LC codec as M4A; the different extension is what tells iOS, the Finder and iTunes that the file is a tone rather than a song.

The one rule to plan around is length. Apple's support article on custom ringtones says ringtones can be up to 30 seconds long, so the real job is "find the best 30 seconds, then extract them".

How to Convert AVCHD to M4R

  1. Upload Your AVCHD File: Drag the .avchd clip onto the page or click "+ Add Files". You can queue several clips and they convert with the same settings. If your clip carries the .MTS or .M2TS extension instead, use MTS to M4R or M2TS to M4R: same family, same result.
  2. Choose the 30 Seconds with Trim: Switch Trim on and enter a Start time and a Duration, in plain seconds or as HH:MM:SS.sss. The note under Duration repeats Apple's guidance: keep it to 30 seconds or less. Scrub the clip in your video player first and write down the second where the moment starts.
  3. Set File Compression, Channel and Sample Rate: Pick Constant Bitrate (a list from 8 to 384 kbps), Custom Bitrate, one of the five Variable Bitrate bands (20k-32k up to 96k-112k), or a Specific file size; Quality Preset is the hands-off option. Audio Codec shows AAC, the only codec an M4R holds. Set Audio Channel to Stereo or Mono if the camcorder recorded 5.1.
  4. Convert and Download: Click Convert and save the .m4r. The clip is uploaded over an encrypted HTTPS connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours. Free, no sign-up, no watermark.

AVCHD vs M4R at a Glance

Property AVCHD (source) M4R (output)
What it holds H.264 video plus one soundtrack Audio only; the video is discarded
Audio codec Dolby Digital AC-3, or Linear PCM on higher-end models AAC-LC
Channels AC-3 up to 5.1; Linear PCM up to 7.1 Whatever you set: Original, Stereo or Mono
Container MPEG-2 transport stream (.MTS / .M2TS on disk) MPEG-4, the same container as M4A
Typical length Minutes to hours per clip 30 seconds or less for a ringtone
Typical size Hundreds of megabytes to gigabytes Well under 1 MB for 30 seconds
Plays on Camcorders, video editors, Blu-ray software iPhone as a ringtone; any AAC player

Bitrate and File Size for a 30-Second Ringtone

AAC file size is simply bitrate (kbps) × seconds ÷ 8 = kilobytes. A ringtone is short, so even generous settings stay small:

Constant Bitrate 30-second M4R Good for
64 kbps about 240 KB A spoken phrase, set to Mono
96 kbps about 360 KB Voices and laughter with some room sound
128 kbps about 480 KB General camcorder audio, music played in the room
192 kbps about 720 KB A concert or recital clip with wide dynamics
256 kbps about 960 KB Headroom when the source is Linear PCM

Going beyond 256 kbps buys nothing you will hear through a phone speaker, and on an AC-3 source it only preserves the first encoder's artifacts more faithfully.

Getting the Ringtone onto Your iPhone

The usual route is to connect the iPhone to a Mac and drag the .m4r onto the iPhone in the Finder sidebar (macOS Catalina or later), or to use iTunes on Windows. The tone then appears in Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone. To give one person their own tone, open Contacts, pick the person, tap Edit, then Ringtone or Text Tone. Without a computer, save the file to Files, import it into GarageBand on the iPhone and use Share > Ringtone; GarageBand also limits exported ringtones to 30 seconds.

Android phones do not need M4R. They take MP3 or OGG ringtones, so for an Android phone use AVCHD to MP3 and trim it the same way.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can an iPhone ringtone made from AVCHD be?

Apple says ringtones can be up to 30 seconds long, and the GarageBand for iPhone guide gives 30 seconds as the maximum length for exported ringtones. You will see a 40-second figure on older sites; it dates from the iTunes era and is not in Apple's current documentation, so set Duration to 30 seconds or less.

Does the video get converted too?

No. The H.264 video is left out entirely and only the soundtrack is decoded and re-encoded to AAC. That is why the result is a few hundred kilobytes even when the AVCHD clip was over a gigabyte. The whole clip still has to upload, though, so a long recording takes a while to send.

My camcorder recorded 5.1 surround. What should I set?

Set Audio Channel to Stereo. A ringtone plays through a phone speaker, and a two-channel file is the ordinary, safe shape for it; Original would carry the camcorder's channel layout into the M4R. For a single voice, such as a toast or a greeting, Mono is even simpler and lets you use a lower bitrate for the same clarity.

Will the ringtone lose quality compared to the camcorder audio?

Most AVCHD camcorders record AC-3, which is already lossy, so converting to AAC adds one more lossy generation. At 128 kbps or above the difference is very hard to hear on a phone. Models that record Linear PCM give you a clean, single encode from uncompressed audio, which is the best starting point you can have.

Can I make the ringtone from the middle of a long recording?

Yes. Trim takes a Start time and a Duration, so a Start time of 00:12:41.500 with a Duration of 25 exports exactly those 25 seconds from deep inside the clip. Only that span is encoded.

What is the difference between this and AVCHD to M4A?

The audio is identical, AAC in an MPEG-4 container; only the extension differs. Choose M4R when the file is meant to be a ringtone, because the .m4r extension is what makes the Finder and iTunes treat it as a tone. For a full-length recording to listen to, use AVCHD to M4A.

Is my footage kept or shared?

No. Your clip is uploaded over TLS, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours. Nothing is published, there is no sign-up, and no watermark or audio tag is added.
