If you're sitting on a folder of .mts or .m2ts clips from a Sony or Panasonic camcorder and storage is the problem, AV1 is the answer: it stores the same footage in a far smaller file. If you mainly need the clips to play everywhere today — phones, TVs, old editors — AVCHD's H.264 video is the safer, more universal choice, and re-wrapping to MP4 beats AV1 for compatibility. .mts or .m2ts clips from a Sony, Panasonic, Canon, or JVC camcorder. Batch is supported — every file inherits the same settings.No. AVCHD already carries lossy H.264, and AV1 can only preserve the detail already in that source — it cannot recover what the camera's compression discarded. The benefit is a much smaller file at the same visual quality, not a sharper picture. If the AVCHD clip looks soft, re-encoding to AV1 keeps it the same, just smaller.
Usually substantially smaller. AVCHD records H.264 at up to 24 Mbit/s (28 Mbit/s in Progressive mode), and AV1 reaches comparable quality at a much lower bitrate. In our testing, a 60-second 1080p AVCHD clip recorded near 24 Mbit/s (around 180 MB) re-encoded to AV1 at the Very High preset landed in the 60-90 MB range — roughly a third to a half the size. The exact ratio depends on resolution, bitrate, and how much motion is in the footage.
Because AV1 fully re-encodes the video with far more complex compression tools — large flexible block partitions, many prediction modes, and refined motion estimation — and that analysis is CPU-intensive. There's no shortcut: getting AV1's size savings means doing the heavy encode. If you just need a quick, widely playable result, AVCHD to MP4 with H.264 is much faster because it can re-wrap the existing stream with far less work.
Not all of them. Software playback is broad — VLC, MPV, and current Chrome, Firefox, and Edge all decode AV1, with Safari 17+ supporting it on capable hardware. Hardware decode is newer: Intel 11th-gen and Arc, NVIDIA RTX 30/40, AMD RDNA2+, Apple's A17 Pro and M3 (2023+), and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handle it. Older phones, smart TVs, and DVD-era players have no AV1 decoder at all, so for guaranteed playback today, H.264 in MP4 is the safer target.
Yes. AVCHD's Dolby AC-3 (or linear PCM) audio is decoded and re-encoded — Opus by default for AV1 output, or AAC if you prefer wider compatibility — and stays in sync with the video. At typical bitrates this is transparent for dialog and ambient sound. No separate step is needed; the audio rides along with the conversion.
Both work. MP4 is the most broadly recognized container and is the right pick if the clips will ever be shared or played in a browser. MKV is the flexible choice for archival — it cleanly carries AV1 video with Opus audio plus multiple audio tracks, chapters, and subtitles — so if you're consolidating a camcorder library, AVCHD to MKV is worth considering.
