DivX to M4R: A Movie Moment as Your iPhone Ringtone
DivX is a video codec, an MPEG-4 Part 2 encoder that became the standard way to squeeze a film onto a CD-R in the early 2000s, so "DivX to M4R" means taking the soundtrack out of a DivX video and turning a slice of it into an iPhone ringtone. A theme tune, a famous line of dialogue, the sound effect everybody recognises: this page drops the picture, decodes the audio track and re-encodes the part you choose as AAC in an .m4r file. M4R is the same container and codec as M4A; the extension is what tells iOS and the Finder that the file is a ringtone.
Two things shape the result. The audio inside a DivX file is almost always already lossy (MP3, or AC-3 Dolby Digital that is often 5.1), and Apple says ringtones can be up to 30 seconds long. So the work is choosing the right 30 seconds, folding surround to stereo, and giving AAC enough bitrate that a second lossy pass stays inaudible.
How to Convert DivX to M4R
- Upload Your DivX File: Drag the
.divxfile onto the page or click "+ Add Files"; several can be queued. Most DivX video is actually named.avi, and for those AVI to M4R reads the same MPEG-4 Part 2 files. - Mark the Clip with Trim: Switch Trim on and give a Start time and a Duration of 30 seconds or less, in seconds or
HH:MM:SS.sss. Note the timestamp in your player first: a film's opening titles, or the exact second a line is spoken. - Choose File Compression and Channels: Constant Bitrate (8 to 384 kbps), Custom Bitrate, the five Variable Bitrate bands (20k-32k up to 96k-112k) or a Specific file size all work; Quality Preset is the hands-off mode. Audio Codec is AAC, the only codec for M4R. If the film track is 5.1 AC-3, set Audio Channel to Stereo.
- Convert and Download: Click Convert and save the
.m4r. Files travel over an encrypted HTTPS connection, are processed on our servers, and are deleted automatically after a few hours. Free, no sign-up, no watermark.
What Is Inside a DivX File vs an M4R
| Property | DivX file (source) | M4R ringtone (output) |
|---|---|---|
| Video | MPEG-4 Part 2 (DivX codec) | None; dropped |
| Audio | Usually MP3; AC-3 on many DVD rips, often 5.1 | AAC-LC |
| Container | AVI, or .divx (DivX Media Format, introduced with DivX 6 in 2005) |
MPEG-4 with the .m4r extension |
| Extra tracks | DivX Media Format can hold several audio tracks, subtitles and chapters | One audio track, no chapters |
| Length | A whole film | Up to 30 seconds |
| Plays on | DivX-certified DVD players, VLC, desktop players | iPhone as a ringtone, any AAC player |
Matching Settings to the DivX Soundtrack
| Source audio | Suggested M4R settings | Why |
|---|---|---|
| MP3 stereo, about 128 kbps | Constant Bitrate 128-160 kbps, Stereo | Matches the source; more bitrate cannot restore what MP3 removed |
| MP3 stereo, 192 kbps or more | Constant Bitrate 192 kbps, Stereo | Keeps the second generation clean for music |
| AC-3 5.1, 384-448 kbps | Constant Bitrate 192 kbps, Audio Channel Stereo | Folds the surround mix to two channels a phone can use |
| A line of dialogue only | Constant Bitrate 96 kbps, Mono | Speech needs little bandwidth; Mono keeps it centred |
A 30-second M4R at 192 kbps is about 720 KB (bitrate × seconds ÷ 8 = kilobytes), so there is no size reason to skimp.
Putting the Ringtone on an iPhone
Connect the iPhone to a Mac and drag the .m4r onto it in the Finder sidebar (macOS Catalina or later), or use iTunes on Windows. Then choose it under Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone, or give it to one caller from Contacts > the person > Edit > Ringtone. Another route needs no computer: save the file to Files, import it into GarageBand on the iPhone and use Share > Ringtone. The same tone can also be picked as a Text Tone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Apple's 30-second limit matter if my clip is longer?
Apple's support article says ringtones can be up to 30 seconds long, and GarageBand shortens a longer ringtone automatically when it exports. A 40-second limit is often quoted from the iTunes era, but it is not in Apple's current documentation. Trimming to 30 seconds yourself means you decide where the tone starts and stops.
Will the ringtone sound better than the audio inside the DivX?
No. Whatever the DivX holds has already been through a lossy encoder, and AAC cannot rebuild detail that was discarded. What you can control is how much the second pass adds: a bitrate at or a little above the source's keeps it out of earshot.
My .divx file has two audio tracks. Which one is used?
The converter writes a single audio track, and there is no track picker. With a 5.1 film track and a stereo commentary, the multichannel film track is normally the one taken, because the automatic choice favours the stream with more channels; with two similar tracks, the first one wins. Listen to the result before you sync it.
Why won't my DivX .avi file upload here?
This page accepts the .divx extension. Use AVI to M4R for DivX video saved as .avi; the extraction is identical, so there is no need to rename anything.
Can I use the same clip on an Android phone?
Android does not use M4R. Its ringtones are usually MP3 or OGG, so take DivX to MP3 and trim the same section.
Is M4R different from M4A?
Only in name. Both are AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container; .m4r is the spelling iOS and the Finder treat as a tone. To keep the whole soundtrack for listening, DivX to M4A is the better page.
What happens to my file after conversion?
It is uploaded over TLS, converted on our servers and deleted automatically after a few hours. It is never shared or made public, and no account is needed.
