This re-encodes a DivX video — the MPEG-4 Part 2 codec behind the DVD-rip era — into MPEG-2, the coding standard DVD-Video, DVB and ATSC were all built on. It is a deliberate step backwards in codec generation, taken because a piece of equipment or software from the disc-and-broadcast world will only accept an MPEG-2 stream. This is also the most tightly constrained page in the family: MPEG-2 is the only video codec offered and MP2 the only audio codec, because that is the combination the format is defined around. The one thing worth reading before you convert is the section on the .mpeg2 extension, which is not a container name and occasionally confuses the software you hand the file to.

.mpeg2 Extension.mpeg2 is not a container. MPEG-2 names a family of coding standards, and the files people actually exchange are MPEG program streams carrying .mpg or .mpeg, or transport streams carrying .ts. Because .mpeg2 is not a filename extension media tools recognise, our converter selects the program-stream muxer explicitly and writes that structure into the file you asked for. What you download is a genuine MPEG program stream under an unusual name.
That has one practical consequence. If a player, an editor or an ingest tool refuses the file, the cause is almost always the extension rather than the contents, because a great deal of software decides how to open a file by looking at its name first. Renaming clip.mpeg2 to clip.mpg normally resolves it on the spot, and nothing inside the file has to change. If you would rather not deal with that at all, DivX to MPG produces the same program stream under the name everything already expects, and DivX to MPEG is the same again with a third spelling and a wider choice of audio codecs.
Because the target names the codec. A .mpeg2 file that did not contain MPEG-2 video would be actively misleading, so the page does not offer the alternatives it offers elsewhere. MP2 — MPEG-1 Audio Layer II — is the audio codec MPEG program streams are conventionally paired with and the one the DVD-Video and VCD specifications name. If you need a different pairing, use a page whose extension does not pin the codec: DivX to MPEG adds MPEG-1 video and AC3, DTS and MP3 audio to the same program-stream output.
It is folded down to stereo MP2. This page writes only MP2 audio, and MP2 as produced here is a two-channel format, so the centre and low-frequency channels are mixed into the left and right pair and the rears are blended in. Playback is unaffected, but the discrete channel layout is gone and cannot be recovered from the output. If the surround mix matters — and on a DVD project it usually does — use DivX to MPEG and pick AC3, or DivX to VOB, which writes the DVD object files directly.
Two effects compound. MPEG-2 is roughly half as efficient as the MPEG-4 Part 2 codec DivX uses, so the same picture simply costs more bits — which is precisely why the DivX scene existed, since squeezing a film onto one CD-R was the goal. On top of that, our MPEG-2 encoder enforces a minimum bitrate, because MPEG-2's rate control fails outright below a certain point rather than producing a smaller file. That floor is 2 Mbit/s up to 720p and scales with resolution, so a rip whose video averaged around 1 Mbit/s roughly doubles in size no matter which setting you choose.
The bitrate-based ones. Quality Preset works by scaling the source's own video bitrate — the top preset asks for roughly 1.5 times it, the lowest for about 0.3 times — and then the minimum-bitrate floor is applied. For a specific number, use Constant Bitrate or Variable Bitrate; for a size budget, use Specific file size. MPEG-2 has no constant-quality rate control of the kind H.264 offers, which is also why disc and broadcast specifications are written in bitrates rather than quality indices.
Only if you make it so, and even then a DVD needs more than a video file. DVD-Video is specified around 720x480 at 29.97 interlaced frames per second for NTSC or 720x576 at 25 for PAL, with video capped at 9.8 Mbit/s and video plus audio at 10.08 Mbit/s. Set the resolution and bitrate accordingly and the stream will satisfy an authoring tool without a second re-encode — but you still need software such as DVDStyler, DVD Flick or TMPGEnc DVD Author to build the VIDEO_TS folder with its .IFO, .VOB and .BUP files before a player will read the disc.
No, and expecting it to is the most common mistake here. This is a lossy-to-lossy re-encode from a newer codec generation to an older, less efficient one, so the best available outcome is that the MPEG-2 pass costs you nothing visible on top of what the DivX encoder already threw away. Selecting a larger frame size stretches the picture without adding detail. Leave Video resolution on "Keep original" unless a disc spec is forcing 720x480 or 720x576 on you.
For its own purposes, yes — and for nothing else. Disc authoring, SVCD work, DVB and ATSC ingest, and legacy edit suites all want MPEG-2 and will keep wanting it while the equipment is in service, and its base patents have long expired. For anything else — a phone, a browser, a smart TV, a social upload, an archive you want to stay small — it is two codec generations behind and the file will be several times larger than it needs to be. In that case use DivX to MP4 for H.264 instead.
.avi extension rather than .divx — will it work here?Not on this page, which matches the .divx extension specifically. DivX is a codec and AVI is the container it normally rides in, so most DivX video is named .avi; the .divx extension proper belongs to DivX Media Format, introduced with DivX 6 in 2005 as an extension of the AVI format rather than a separate container. Don't rename the file — use AVI to MPEG-2, which reads the MPEG-4 Part 2 stream inside whether DivX or Xvid produced it.
