DivX is an early-2000s implementation of the MPEG-4 Part 2 (Advanced Simple Profile) codec, usually carried as DivX video with MP3 audio inside an AVI container. MPEG (.mpeg) is the much older MPEG program stream that DVD-era set-top boxes, disc-authoring chains, and broadcast ingest systems still expect. This guide walks through the conversion, explains which settings matter, and is honest up front: DivX to MPEG is a downconvert to an older, less efficient codec — you do it for player compatibility, not to gain quality.

If your goal is a smaller file, sharper picture, or playback on a phone, browser, or modern TV, MPEG is the wrong target — convert DivX to MP4 (H.264) instead, which plays nearly everywhere and stays far smaller. A standard DVD player and most legacy hardware only guarantee MPEG-1/MPEG-2 decoding — the DVD-Video disc format is MPEG-2. DivX is the MPEG-4 Part 2 codec, a different family, so unless the player carries the DivX logo it may reject the file or play picture without sound. Re-encoding to an MPEG-2 .mpeg gives that player a codec its certification actually covers.
MPEG-2 video with MP2 audio by default, which is what DVD-Video, SVCD, broadcast ingest, and most legacy HD-capable hardware expect. MPEG-1 is the right choice only for Video CD (VCD) playback on very old standalone players. Some other converters default the whole .mpeg category to MPEG-1, so confirm what your target device needs before authoring a disc.
No. DivX is already a lossy MPEG-4 ASP codec, and the MPEG-2 video inside the .mpeg output is also lossy and less efficient. Re-encoding from one lossy format to another cannot recover detail — at best it preserves what is there, and aggressive bitrate or resolution cuts will visibly degrade it. Convert to MPEG for compatibility, not for a quality gain.
Because MPEG-2 is the older, less efficient codec. DivX (MPEG-4 ASP) was designed to pack a watchable movie onto a single CD, while MPEG-2 needs a much higher bitrate for the same perceived quality. In our testing, a 60-second standard-definition DivX clip of about 12 MB expanded past 30 MB as an MPEG-2 program stream at a visually comparable bitrate. That growth is the cost of the legacy codec, not a flaw in the conversion.
Not on its own. The .mpeg is just the program stream; a DVD-Video disc also needs a VIDEO_TS folder with IFO/BUP/VOB files and usually menus. Author the MPEG into a compliant disc image with DVDStyler, ImgBurn, or Nero, keep the MPEG-2 video bitrate at or below 9.8 Mbit/s, and use 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL). If you want to skip discs entirely, DivX to MP4 is the modern path.
