DNG is Adobe's Digital Negative — an open, TIFF-based camera RAW still image, not a video. RM (RealMedia) is RealNetworks' legacy streaming container from the RealPlayer era. This tool wraps your single DNG photo into a short, silent RealVideo clip that shows that one frame for a few seconds. It exists for the rare workflow that still feeds a RealMedia pipeline; for an everyday photo, convert to DNG to JPG or DNG to TIFF instead, and for a clip anything can play, use DNG to MP4.
A DNG holds wide-latitude RAW sensor data. RM holds 8-bit RealVideo. So the conversion is a two-stage compromise: the RAW is demosaiced and tone-mapped down to 8-bit, then that single frame is encoded as a still video loop with no audio track. You choose how long the frame is held (the clip duration) and the output resolution; there is nothing to "play" beyond a frozen image. If you need the photo's full tonal range or metadata, RM is the wrong destination — keep it as a RAW or TIFF.

The conversion demosaics and tone-maps the RAW down to 8-bit before encoding, so highlight and shadow detail that you could have recovered in a RAW editor is baked in. In our testing, the visible frame looks correct, but it is no longer an editable negative.
RealPlayer is the native application; VLC and MPlayer can open many RM files but their support is partial. RM is a legacy format with little modern playback support, which is why we recommend converting RM back to MP4 if you need to share or play the clip widely.
For almost every use, no. If you want a normal viewable photo, use DNG to JPG or DNG to TIFF. If you want a short clip that plays everywhere, use DNG to MP4. Choose RM only when an old RealMedia or RealPlayer workflow specifically requires the .rm container.
The output uses the H.263-based RealVideo RV10/RV20 family. The later RV30 and RV40 codecs (RealVideo's H.264-era versions) have no open-source encoder, so they are not available for encoding here.

RealVideo RV10/RV20 are H.263-based codecs from the streaming era, so they were built for modest frame sizes rather than high definition. You can keep the DNG's original resolution or pick a preset, but for compatibility with the old RealPlayer-era setups that actually need .rm, a standard-definition size is the safer choice. Since the clip is a single held frame, a smaller resolution keeps the file compact with no motion detail to lose.
