HEIC is the high-efficiency image container Apple devices save photos in, and it can hold more than one picture — a Live Photo, a burst, or a multi-image sequence. APNG (Animated PNG) takes those frames and plays them as a short, looping animation that opens in almost any browser, where a raw HEIC usually shows nothing. Upload several HEIC photos and they become the frames of one APNG, in upload order; upload a single HEIC and you get a clean one-frame PNG-compatible image.
HEIC has narrow support outside Apple's ecosystem — Windows needs Microsoft's HEIF Image Extensions installed before File Explorer will even preview the file, and most web browsers will not render it inline. APNG solves the portability problem for animations: it is supported by roughly 94.7% of browsers worldwide (caniuse), including current Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and Opera. Because APNG is backward-compatible with PNG, any viewer that cannot animate it falls back to showing the first frame rather than failing outright — so the file is never a dead end the way a stray HEIC often is.

Add as many HEIC photos as you like — each becomes a frame in the order you upload them, and the Framerate setting controls how fast they play. A single HEIC produces a one-frame APNG, which behaves like an ordinary lossless PNG everywhere.
If your HEIC holds a multi-image sequence such as a Live Photo or burst, those internal frames can be carried through to the APNG so the motion is preserved. A standard single-shot HEIC has only one image, so it converts to a single static frame.

APNG frames use PNG's lossless compression, so the conversion step itself does not re-compress with artifacts. The one caveat is that HEIC is often stored lossily on the phone, so the APNG can only be as sharp as the source frames — it preserves what is there rather than recovering detail HEIC already discarded.
APNG keeps full 24-bit color and an 8-bit alpha channel, so it avoids the 256-color banding and hard-edged transparency that make GIFs look dated. GIF wins only where you need the absolute broadest legacy support. In our testing, a short multi-frame clip exported as APNG kept gradients clean where the GIF version showed visible dithering. If you specifically want a GIF, use HEIC to GIF instead; for a single still image, HEIC to PNG is the right tool.
Lower the Image quality (%), reduce the Colors palette, or pick a smaller Preset Resolution — fewer colors and fewer pixels are the biggest levers for an APNG, since lossless frames add up quickly across an animation. The Framerate setting controls playback speed, not how many frames exist — it plays the HEIC images you uploaded faster or slower. The 10 FPS default is a good general choice. Drop to 1–5 FPS to page through a few distinct photos like a slideshow, and raise it toward 25–50 FPS for smooth motion when your frames come from a burst or a Live Photo's internal sequence. If the animation runs too quickly or too slowly, re-convert at a different framerate; the frame count stays the same either way.
