ICO is a Windows icon image — a small square still picture, often a 16×16 to 256×256 favicon or app icon. RM (RealMedia) is RealNetworks' streaming-era video container from the RealPlayer days. So this is a still-to-video conversion: your single icon becomes a short, silent RealMedia clip that shows that one image. It is a niche, novelty conversion — RM is effectively obsolete, and because an icon is tiny, the resulting video is low-resolution and looks blocky once upscaled. Why the Output Looks Blocky and Has No Sound
An ICO file is at most 256×256 pixels, so there is very little detail to work with. When that small image is encoded into a video frame — especially if you scale it up to a larger resolution preset — the RV10 codec has to stretch a few pixels across a much wider canvas, which produces visible blockiness. The conversion also adds no audio track: an icon contains no sound, so the RM is silent by design. For a sharper result, keep the resolution at or near the icon's native size rather than upscaling to 720p or 1080p.

Why would anyone convert an ICO to RM?
Honestly, rarely. RM is an obsolete RealNetworks format, and turning a static icon into a silent RealMedia video is mostly a novelty or a one-off compatibility need for a legacy RealPlayer workflow. For almost every real use case, ICO to PNG (to keep it an image) or ICO to MP4 (for a playable clip) is the better choice.
Will the RM file have any sound?
No. An icon has no audio, so the output is a silent video clip. This conversion uses an image-to-video, no-audio path — the RM contains a RealVideo stream and no RealAudio track.
Which RealVideo codec does the output use?
By default the clip is encoded as RealVideo RV10, with RV20 selectable. These are the H.263-based RealVideo codecs that FFmpeg can actually encode; the newer RV30 and RV40 codecs are decode-only in FFmpeg, so they aren't available as output here.
What can play an .rm file today?
RealPlayer is the native player, and VLC offers partial support for RM. Beyond those, playback options are very limited on modern devices, which is the main reason most people convert away from RM rather than into it.
Will the icon look sharp in the RM video?
It depends on resolution. In our testing, leaving a 256×256 ICO at its native size kept the clip reasonably crisp, while upscaling the same icon to a 720p or 1080p preset produced a noticeably blocky, soft frame because there simply isn't enough source detail to fill the larger canvas.
How long can the clip be?
You set this with the "Duration" control in Advanced Options, which ranges from a fraction of a second up to about 10 seconds per frame. Since an ICO is a single image, the whole clip just holds that one frame for the duration you choose.
Does the icon's transparency carry into the RM?
No. ICO files commonly include an alpha channel so the icon shows with rounded or cut-out edges, but RealVideo has no transparency support. Any transparent area is filled with the Background Color you choose (White by default), so a favicon that was see-through around the edges appears on a solid rectangle in the .rm clip. Set the Background Color to match wherever the clip will sit if that fringing matters.
