M2TS is the AVCHD / Blu-ray container your camcorder records — H.264 video and Dolby AC-3 audio wrapped in an MPEG-2 transport stream, usually 1080p or 1080i. DivX is an older MPEG-4 Part 2 (Advanced Simple Profile) codec, the same family as Xvid, that plays on thousands of DivX-certified DVD players. Convert to DivX when you specifically need to play AVCHD footage on an old set-top DivX/Xvid player; for any modern phone, TV, or computer, convert M2TS to MP4 instead — H.264 keeps the full HD resolution, plays everywhere, and is more efficient per byte.

DivX-certified DVD players, Blu-ray players, and standalone media players from the mid-2000s onward play DivX (and the closely related Xvid) natively. Check your player's spec sheet — if it lists a DivX or Xvid logo, it should read the file from a USB stick or burned disc. Modern phones, smart TVs, and computers play MP4 more reliably, so DivX is mainly worth it for legacy hardware.
Yes, some. This is a re-encode from H.264 to the older MPEG-4 Part 2 codec, which is less efficient, so at the same file size DivX looks softer than the H.264 source. If your player's profile is standard-definition, 1080p footage is also downscaled. Re-encoding can never add detail back, so keep the original M2TS if you may want a clean copy later.
Often yes, because you can target a lower bitrate and resolution for an SD player. But size-for-size, DivX is not more efficient than the H.264 in your M2TS — you're trading quality for compatibility, not getting "free" compression. If your only goal is a smaller HD file, compress M2TS or convert to MP4 instead, both of which keep H.264.
For almost everything except old DivX/Xvid hardware, MP4 is the better choice: it keeps the original HD resolution, plays on virtually every modern device, and is more efficient per byte. Only choose DivX when a specific older DVD or media player can't read MP4 or AVCHD. For that path, convert M2TS to MP4.
They share the same MPEG-4 Part 2 decoding core and are interchangeable on the playback side — Xvid began as an open-source fork of the DivX encoder. Most "DivX-certified" players also read Xvid files. The DivX output here is built on this same MPEG-4 ASP standard, so a player that lists either logo should handle it.
