Turn an AVCHD camcorder or Blu-ray .m2ts clip into a DivX-encoded file that mid-2000s DivX-certified DVD players, set-top boxes, and in-car head units can read. DivX is an MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile codec — the same family as Xvid — and it exists on this page for one reason: hardware that was built before H.264 and will not touch an MP4. Everything else about the job is honest below, including the fact that the output file needs one small piece of care before some players will open it.

.divx file I download a real DivX Media Format container?Not the full authoring format. What you get is an AVI-structured file carrying DivX-encoded video, written out under the .divx extension — which is reasonable, since DivX Media Format was itself defined as an extension to AVI. What is missing is the DMF authoring layer that DivX 6 introduced: interactive menus, multiple selectable subtitle tracks, and chapter structures. For playing a camcorder clip on a certified player, none of that is needed. If you were expecting a menu-driven disc image, this is not the tool.
Yes, try that first. Plenty of players, media servers, and editors decide what a file is by its extension before they ever look inside, and .divx is not on every whitelist. Renaming clip.divx to clip.avi alters nothing in the file itself — the bytes are already an AVI structure — and it very often makes a stubborn device open it immediately. If the rename does not help, the problem is the profile rather than the extension: your player is probably standard-definition only, and needs the resolution dropped.
DivX-certified DVD players, Blu-ray players, standalone media boxes, and a good many mid-2000s-onward car head units, generally reading from a USB stick or a burned disc. Check the device or its manual for a DivX or Xvid logo — that certification is the reliable signal, not the file extension. Anything made in the last decade almost certainly prefers H.264 in an MP4, so DivX is worth choosing only when a specific older device is the destination.
Because DivX is not more efficient than what you started with. Your M2TS holds H.264, which needs roughly half the bitrate of MPEG-4 Part 2 for comparable quality, so re-encoding to DivX at the same resolution and a similar look generally costs more bits rather than fewer. Files do shrink when you also downscale — dropping 1080p to a 480p preset removes about three-quarters of the pixels — but that is the resolution doing the work, not the codec. If a smaller HD file is the actual goal, Compress M2TS keeps H.264 and shrinks it properly.
No — Video Codec on the DivX page lists DivX alone, because picking anything else would make the .divx extension a lie. If you want the same legacy AVI-family target with a codec choice, M2TS to AVI exposes the full dropdown, including MPEG-4, Xvid, MS MPEG-4, H.264, MPEG-2, MJPEG, and HuffYUV, and writes a plain .avi file. Audio is a free choice on both pages.
They share ancestry and a decoding core. When DivX commercialised its encoding code, developers from the OpenDivX project forked off and started Xvid from that same encoder base, so both produce MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile video. On the playback side they are largely interchangeable: a player certified for one usually reads the other without complaint. Choose based on what your device's spec sheet names — and if it names Xvid specifically, M2TS to Xvid writes that extension.
Probably, yes. DivX certification is tiered, and the Home Theater profile — the one most set-top DVD players carry — tops out around 640×480 at 30 fps. Feed it a 1920×1080 file and it will typically stutter, refuse the file, or ignore it entirely. Open Video resolution, choose Preset Resolutions, and pick 480p or 360p; the preset sets the height and the width follows your clip's aspect ratio. If the player's manual quotes a maximum bitrate too, set Constant Bitrate to stay under it.
Because the source is interlaced and this converter does not change that. AVCHD specifies 60i and 50i modes, and many consumer camcorders recorded 1080i straight out of the box. Each frame is woven from two fields captured moments apart, so anything moving shows comb teeth on a progressive display. There is no deinterlacing step anywhere in this pipeline — no preset enables one, and routing through MP4 or any other format first does not help, because the combing is already baked into the frames. Deinterlace in a desktop editor and convert the progressive export if it matters.
.MTS and .m2ts are the same BDAV transport stream; the camcorder writes the short 8.3-style .MTS name on the card and the clip usually appears as .m2ts once copied to a computer.
