DivX is an MPEG-4 Part 2 video codec from 2000-2001, usually wrapped in an AVI or .divx file. M2TS is the BDAV MPEG-2 Transport Stream container used by Blu-ray and AVCHD camcorder footage, which typically carries H.264 video. Converting DivX to M2TS re-encodes the video into a transport stream so it can be fed to a Blu-ray or AVCHD authoring tool, or to a player that expects transport-stream files. If you upscale the resolution, you only stretch the existing pixels — it does not become true high definition.
Not by itself. A standalone .m2ts is only the stream payload. To play in a set-top Blu-ray or AVCHD player, the file has to sit inside the correct folder structure — BDMV/STREAM/ for Blu-ray or AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/ for AVCHD — which an authoring program builds. The converted file plays fine in software players like VLC right away.
AVCHD-compliant M2TS expects Dolby Digital (AC-3) or uncompressed LPCM audio, and Blu-ray adds DTS. DivX files commonly carry MP3 audio, which is not part of that set, so the audio is transcoded to a supported codec. In our testing, DivX clips with MP3 tracks were re-encoded to AC-3 to stay AVCHD-compatible.
Pick M2TS only if a Blu-ray/AVCHD authoring tool or a transport-stream player specifically needs it. For phones, smart TVs, browsers, and editors, MP4 with H.264 plays everywhere and produces a smaller, simpler file. Use DivX to MP4 for general-purpose playback, or M2TS to MP4 to go the other direction.
It can. Both M2TS and MP4 commonly hold H.264 video, so picture quality at the same bitrate is comparable. The difference is the container: M2TS is a transport stream built for streaming and disc playback with timing packets, while MP4 is a file-oriented container that seeks and streams more easily on general devices.
Yes. DivX is already lossy, and re-encoding into M2TS adds a second lossy pass, so there is a small generation-loss hit. Keeping Quality Preset at Very High and a healthy bitrate minimizes visible difference. If your goal is only to rewrap rather than re-encode, M2TS is not a good fit because DivX's MPEG-4 Part 2 video is not a valid M2TS/AVCHD codec and must be re-encoded.
