M2TS is the Blu-ray and AVCHD flavour of an MPEG-2 transport stream; TS (.ts) is the plain broadcast MPEG-2 transport stream used by DVB/ATSC tuners, IPTV pipelines, HLS packagers, and media servers. Convert M2TS to TS when a broadcast tool, streaming ingest, or an older set-top box rejects the Blu-ray-specific .m2ts wrapper but happily reads a generic transport stream. Files upload over an encrypted connection, are processed on our servers, and are deleted automatically after a few hours — no sign-up, no watermark.
If your goal is simply to play the video on a phone, laptop, or smart TV, TS is the wrong target — use M2TS to MP4 instead. TS earns its place only in broadcast, DVR, and streaming-ingest workflows.

Both formats carry the same MPEG-2 transport-stream payload, so the split is structural rather than about picture quality. A standard TS packet is exactly 188 bytes — a size chosen decades ago partly for compatibility with ATM network cells and Reed-Solomon error correction. M2TS prepends a 4-byte header to every packet, making it 192 bytes; that header holds a copy-permission flag and a 27 MHz arrival timestamp that Blu-ray players use for precise random-access timing on optical media.

It re-encodes. There is no stream-copy or pure-remux path on this converter, so the audio and video are decoded and re-compressed into a fresh transport stream. In our testing the output defaults to H.264 video and AAC audio in standard 188-byte MPEG-TS packets; keep the Quality Preset on "Very High" if you want the result to stay visually close to the source.
Because the file is re-encoded, expect one generation of lossy compression rather than an identical copy. At the "Very High" preset the difference is hard to spot on normal viewing, but if you need a truly lossless archive of a Blu-ray rip, keep the original M2TS or convert to a lossless-capable container instead of TS.
Legacy broadcast hardware and DVB muxers usually expect MPEG-2 video with MP2 audio, so choose those under Advanced Options. Newer IPTV and media-server software handles the default H.264 + AAC combination fine and produces much smaller files, so only fall back to MPEG-2/MP2 when a specific device demands it.
VLC, mpv, PotPlayer, and MPC-HC play TS files directly, and most broadcast, IPTV, and media-server tools ingest them natively. Web browsers and QuickTime generally will not, which is why TS is a workflow format rather than a share-with-a-friend format.
Yes. AVCHD camcorders write the exact same transport stream as .mts on the memory card and .m2ts when it is copied to a disc, so the content is identical. If your files carry the .mts extension, use the MTS to TS converter so the accepted-file check matches.
Convert to TS only when a broadcast, DVR, or streaming-ingest tool specifically needs a transport stream. For everyday playback on phones, laptops, browsers, and smart TVs, MP4 is far more compatible and produces smaller files — M2TS to MP4 is the better choice there.
