How to Convert M4R to AC3
- Upload Your M4R Ringtone: Drag the
.m4rfile onto the page or click "+ Add Files". Several files can be queued and converted with the same settings. - Set the Bitrate: Under File Compression, Constant Bitrate writes exactly the rate you pick, from 32 to 384 kbps; Custom Bitrate takes a typed value; Quality Preset chooses for you. For stereo Dolby Digital, 192 kbps is the long-standing convention.
- Match Sample Rate and Channels: Audio Sample Rate offers "ORIGINAL", 44100 Hz and 48000 Hz. Pick 48000 Hz for DVD and most video projects. Audio Channel can stay "ORIGINAL" or be forced to "MONO" or "STEREO"; Trim keeps just the section you need.
- Convert and Download: Click Convert and save the
.ac3. Files are uploaded over TLS, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours. No sign-up, no watermark.
Why a Ringtone Might End Up in Dolby Digital
An M4R is an iPhone ringtone: AAC-LC audio in an MPEG-4 container, the same structure as an M4A, with an extension that tells iOS to file it as a tone. A good ringtone is a short, memorable piece of sound — and short, memorable sounds are exactly what video projects need for intros, logo stings, menu loops and transitions.
AC-3 is Dolby Digital, the lossy multichannel codec Dolby introduced in 1991 and the audio format of DVD-Video, much broadcast television and countless AV receivers. Reasons to take a ringtone there include:
- Disc authoring. DVD-Video audio tracks must be LPCM, AC-3, MPEG audio or DTS, and AC-3 is the common choice. A menu loop or intro sting made from a tone has to be in one of those formats before the authoring tool accepts it.
- Matching other tracks. If the rest of a project's audio is already AC-3, a muxer or editor may want the jingle in the same format.
- Testing playback chains. A short, recognisable AC-3 clip is handy for checking that a TV, receiver or soundbar decodes Dolby Digital over HDMI or optical.
Two honest limits. First, the ringtone is lossy AAC and AC-3 is lossy too, so this is a second generation of compression that can only lose a little quality. Second, AC-3 cannot invent surround: a stereo tone becomes a 2.0 AC-3 stream and a mono tone stays mono.
M4R vs AC3
| Property | M4R (input) | AC3 (output) |
|---|---|---|
| Codec | AAC-LC | Dolby Digital (AC-3) |
| Developer | MPEG audio, Apple ringtone extension | Dolby Laboratories, 1991 |
| Compression | Lossy | Lossy, constant bitrate |
| Channels | Mono or stereo | Up to 5.1; this tone keeps its own layout |
| Sample rates | Usually 44.1 or 48 kHz | 32, 44.1 or 48 kHz only |
| Where it plays | iPhone, Mac, most players | DVD players, AV receivers, video tools |
| Typical length | 30 seconds or less | Any length |
| Best for | Ringing an iPhone | Disc authoring, video projects, receiver tests |
Picking a Bitrate for a Stereo or Mono Tone
Since a ringtone is at most stereo, the high rates used for 5.1 film soundtracks are unnecessary. Size in kilobytes is bitrate × seconds ÷ 8.
| Purpose | Bitrate | 30-second AC3 | 10-second sting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mono voice or effect | 96 kbps | about 360 KB | about 120 KB |
| Compact stereo | 128 kbps | about 480 KB | about 160 KB |
| Conventional stereo Dolby Digital | 192 kbps | about 720 KB | about 240 KB |
| Stereo with extra headroom | 256 kbps | about 960 KB | about 320 KB |
| Highest on this page | 384 kbps | about 1.44 MB | about 480 KB |
DVD-Video allows AC-3 up to 448 kbps for 5.1 soundtracks. This page tops out at 384 kbps, which is more than a two-channel ringtone needs.
The Bitrate Controls on This Page
- Constant Bitrate is the literal choice: the rate you select from the 32–384 kbps list is the rate in the stream. Use it when an authoring spec names a number.
- Custom Bitrate accepts a typed value within the range the encoder supports here.
- Quality Preset lets the converter choose the rate.
- No Variable Bitrate or Specific file size. AC-3 is a constant-bitrate codec, so the page only shows controls the format can honour. To hit a size budget, divide the size you can spare by the duration and pick the nearest Constant Bitrate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a stereo ringtone become 5.1 surround?
No. AC-3 can carry up to six channels, but it encodes the channels it is given. A stereo tone becomes 2.0 AC-3; a receiver may upmix it for playback, but that is the receiver's processing, not discrete surround in the file.
What sample rate should I use for a DVD?
48000 Hz. AC-3 defines 32, 44.1 and 48 kHz, but DVD-Video uses 48 kHz, so authoring tools expect it. The Audio Sample Rate list on this page offers "ORIGINAL", 44100 and 48000 Hz for that reason.
Which bitrate should I choose?
192 kbps is the traditional rate for a stereo Dolby Digital track and suits nearly every use of a ringtone. Use 96–128 kbps for a mono effect, or 256 kbps if the tone has a lot of high-frequency detail and you have the space.
Will the AC3 sound worse than my ringtone?
Slightly, because the audio is decoded from AAC and re-encoded with a different lossy codec. At 192 kbps stereo the difference is hard to hear on home-theatre equipment. Keep the original .m4r as your master.
Why can't I set a target file size?
AC-3 runs at a constant bitrate, so the file size is simply bitrate × duration. Rather than offer a size control that would just pick a bitrate, the page lets you choose the bitrate directly. If you want to shorten the tone first, use Trim here or Trim M4R.
Will my phone play the AC3 file?
Not as a ringtone. iPhones use M4R for custom ringtones, and phones in general are not designed to ring with Dolby Digital files. AC-3 is for discs, video and home-theatre equipment. If you need the audio uncompressed for a video editor instead, M4R to WAV avoids a second lossy codec.
Can I turn an AC3 file back into a ringtone?
Yes. AC3 to M4R converts Dolby Digital audio into an iPhone tone. Keep the result to 30 seconds or less, the ringtone length Apple documents.
How are my files handled?
Files are uploaded over an encrypted (TLS) connection, converted on our servers, and deleted automatically a few hours after processing. No account and no watermark. All other ringtone conversions are listed on the M4R Converter.
