.m4r file or click to browse. This page takes M4R ringtones, such as one downloaded from a ringtone site, one you made earlier, or one copied off a computer.M4R is the file type iPhone uses for custom ringtones: AAC audio (AAC-LC) in an MPEG-4 container with the .m4r extension. It is the same container and codec as M4A; the extension is what tells iOS, the Finder and iTunes that the file is a tone. Trimming keeps the selected part of an existing ringtone and throws away everything before and after it, without leaving the M4R format.
Common reasons to trim a ringtone you already have:
Trim keeps one continuous section. To delete a section from the middle of a tone and join the rest, use Cut M4R instead. If your source is not an M4R yet, start with Audio to M4R, which trims and converts in one step.
| Property | Trim M4R | Cut M4R |
|---|---|---|
| What you select | The part to keep | The part or parts to remove |
| Result | One continuous section | The remaining segments joined into one tone |
| Typical use | Shortening a tone, skipping a slow intro | Removing a gap, a word or a bar in the middle |
| Controls | Start/end handles, Start Time (s) and End Time (s) | Split points with a Keep/Remove toggle per segment |
| Output | M4R (AAC) | M4R (AAC) |
AAC size is bitrate (kbps) × seconds ÷ 8 = kilobytes. Trimming shrinks the file in proportion to the time you remove.
| Length | 128 kbps M4R | 256 kbps M4R |
|---|---|---|
| 5 seconds (text tone) | ~80 KB | ~160 KB |
| 10 seconds | ~160 KB | ~320 KB |
| 15 seconds | ~240 KB | ~480 KB |
| 25 seconds | ~400 KB | ~800 KB |
| 30 seconds (Apple's limit) | ~480 KB | ~960 KB |
Getting the .m4r onto the phone, using the usual routes:
.m4r onto it.Then pick it under Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone (iPhone User Guide), or for one person, Contacts > the contact > Edit > Ringtone or Text Tone.
Android ringtones are usually MP3 or OGG, not M4R. Convert the trimmed tone with M4R to MP3 for an Android phone.
The trim lands where you set it, and the kept audio is re-encoded as AAC at roughly the source bitrate. That is one more lossy generation, which is very hard to hear on a phone speaker, but avoid trimming the same tone over and over; go back to the original file if you need another version.
30 seconds or less. That is the length Apple's support article gives for ringtones, and the GarageBand for iPhone guide gives 30 seconds as the maximum for exported ringtones. For a text tone, a few seconds is usually enough.
Trim keeps the selection: you mark one section and everything outside it is removed. Cut removes the selection: you split the tone into segments, mark the unwanted ones as Remove, and the rest is joined back together.
Yes. Open this page in Safari, upload the .m4r from Files, set the handles and trim. Save the result to Files, then use a computer or the GarageBand route to install it as a ringtone.
This page takes M4R files. For other formats, Audio to M4R converts and trims in one step, or Trim M4A handles M4A files you want to keep as songs.
Yes, as long as it keeps the .m4r extension and is 30 seconds or less. The output stays AAC in an MPEG-4 container with the .m4r extension.
Trimming happens on xconvert's servers. Files are uploaded over TLS (HTTPS) and deleted automatically after a few hours, and no account is needed.
