ORF is the Olympus RAW format — the unprocessed sensor file an Olympus or OM System camera writes for a still photo. ICO is the Windows icon container, where each image is at most 256×256 pixels. This converter renders the raw photo to a standard image and packs it into an icon, so a frame you shot can become an app icon or a website favicon.
This is a heavy downscale: a 12- or 14-bit raw with the full sensor resolution is demosaiced, baked down to 8-bit color, and shrunk to icon size. Use it when you genuinely want an icon. To keep a viewable photo, convert to a normal image format with ORF to JPG or ORF to PNG instead.

An ICO image tops out at 256×256 pixels, and the conversion bakes your raw's 12- or 14-bit data down to standard 8-bit color. A 20-megapixel capture losing almost all of its resolution and dynamic range is expected — icons are built for small UI display, not photo viewing. If you wanted a normal picture, use ORF to JPG instead.
Pick the size to match where the icon appears. 16×16 and 32×32 cover toolbar and taskbar icons, 48×48 covers desktop shortcuts, and 256×256 covers high-DPI app icons and the large preview in Windows Explorer. A single .ico can hold several of these, but this converter outputs the resolution you select.
Yes. A .ico is the classic favicon format and is recognized by every major browser. A 32×32 or 48×48 icon works well for favicon.ico; many sites also reference a separate 16×16 for crisp display in browser tabs.
It can. ICO supports a 32-bit mode with an 8-bit alpha channel, which gives smooth anti-aliased edges. An ORF photo has no alpha to begin with, so the frame fills the icon; if you need a cut-out icon with a transparent background, render to PNG first, edit out the background, then convert that PNG to ICO.
No. Icons do not carry photographic metadata. The shutter speed, ISO, lens, and embedded color profile from the ORF are dropped when the image becomes an icon. Keep the original .orf if you need that data, and export a JPG or TIFF for any version that should retain EXIF.
