This is the short course on getting a usable .ico out of a Sony Alpha raw file: which size to pick, why the result never looks as sharp as the photograph did, and what an ICO can and cannot hold. An ICO is a Windows icon — the image behind a desktop shortcut, an application, or a site's favicon — and it addresses at most 256×256 pixels, so a 24-megapixel raw is being reduced by an enormous factor on the way in. That is the whole job of this page. If you want a viewable copy of the picture instead, ARW to JPG or ARW to PNG is the right tool.

ICO is a delivery format for interface graphics, not a way to keep a photograph. If your goal is to view, print, share, or re-edit the shot, this is the wrong page: convert ARW to JPG for a universal image, ARW to PNG for lossless 8-bit output, or ARW to TIFF for a high-bit-depth editing master. ICO is also the wrong target for modern app icon pipelines that expect PNG or SVG assets — check what your platform actually ingests before generating one. And if you need a multi-size icon set with 16, 32, 48, and 256 pixel variants inside a single file, generate each size here and combine them in a dedicated icon editor.
ICO addresses at most 256×256 pixels, so a multi-megapixel Sony frame is being shrunk by a factor of twenty or more, and every downscale adds anti-aliasing softness. Photographic detail simply does not survive at 16 to 48 pixels — the eye is left with a colour blob. The fix is compositional rather than technical: crop hard to a single high-contrast subject before converting, or build the icon from a simple graphic instead of a full scene.
For a website favicon, 16P and 32P cover browser tabs and bookmark lists. For a Windows desktop or application icon, choose 256P — it is the largest size the format addresses, and Windows scales an oversized icon down more cleanly than it scales a small one up. Microsoft's icon guidance names 16, 32, and 48 pixels square as the sizes worth supplying for classic interface use.
The format can: an ICO image can be 32-bit with an 8-bit alpha channel, which is how modern Windows icons get smooth, non-rectangular edges. Your source cannot, though. An ARW is an opaque sensor capture with no transparent areas, so the icon comes out fully filled. To get a transparent background you have to cut the subject out in an image editor first — convert to ARW to PNG, mask it there, and build the icon from that.
No. The ICO format supports multiple images at different sizes and colour depths inside one file, and Windows picks the closest match to what it needs, but this conversion writes a single image at the size you select. If you want a true multi-resolution icon, convert the photo once per size here and merge the results in an icon editor that supports multi-image ICO files.
Only if your source is square. We fit the image inside the box you choose and keep its aspect ratio, so a standard 3:2 Sony frame at 256 lands at 256 pixels wide by roughly 170 tall. Windows will still display it, but it will not fill a square icon slot. Crop to 1:1 — or pad the frame with a background colour — before converting if squareness matters.
Because of how the format's directory is laid out: each image entry stores its width and height in a single byte apiece, which caps the addressable dimension at 256. Our converter clamps any larger request to that limit rather than failing, so an oversized request quietly becomes a 256-pixel icon. If you need something bigger, you need a different format — PNG is what most modern icon pipelines actually consume.
No, and it is not meant to. The conversion exists to make an icon: the image is reduced to at most 256 pixels on its longest side and to ordinary 8-bit colour, so virtually all of the raw's resolution and tonal latitude is discarded. To keep a viewable, editable photograph, convert your ARW to JPG, PNG, or TIFF instead, and treat the icon as a by-product.
