Common Errors and How to Fix Them

• "My MPG has no sound" — That is expected. A Publisher page contains no audio, so the output is a silent clip by design. Add a soundtrack afterward in a video editor if you need one.
• "The text in my publication is blurry" — Editable text becomes pixels during rasterization, so small body copy can soften. Raise the Quality Preset (Very High is recommended) and pick a larger Video resolution before converting.
• "The file is far bigger than the .pub" — A document stores one layout; a video repeats each page across dozens of frames, and MPEG-2 compresses less efficiently than modern codecs. Shorten the Duration or convert to PUB to MP4 for a smaller file.
• "My browser or phone won't play the .mpg" — Most modern browsers and phones do not natively play .mpg files; that is the trade-off for MPG's compatibility with older DVD and set-top hardware. Use VLC, or output MP4 instead.

When This Doesn't Work

If your goal is a faithful, still-editable copy of the layout rather than a video, MPG is the wrong target — rasterizing flattens the text and you lose selectable copy. For that, use PUB to PDF, which is also the format Microsoft itself recommends for preserving Publisher files. This matters now because Microsoft has announced that Publisher will no longer be supported after October 1, 2026 (when the perpetual Office LTSC 2021 reaches end of support), and advises converting existing .pub files to PDF for viewing or Word for editing before that date. Convert to MPG only when a video player or slideshow specifically needs a clip; convert to PUB to JPG if you just need the pages as images.

Does converting PUB to MPG keep my text editable?
