RMVB to M4R: Theme Songs from Old RealMedia Episodes
RMVB, RealMedia Variable Bitrate, is the RealVideo flavour that from about 2003 became the way TV dramas, anime fansubs and films were shared across East Asia, packing a full episode into a fraction of the space of a DVD. If you have a folder of them, you probably also have the opening theme of a show you loved. This page reads the RealAudio track inside an .rmvb, drops the video, and re-encodes the part you choose as AAC in an .m4r file, the iPhone's ringtone format. M4R and M4A are the same AAC-in-MPEG-4 file; .m4r is simply the extension iOS treats as a tone.
Apple says ringtones can be up to 30 seconds long, which is about the length of a TV opening's first chorus.
How to Convert RMVB to M4R
- Upload Your RMVB File: Drag the
.rmvbfile onto the page or click "+ Add Files". You can queue a whole series and convert each with the same settings; for constant-bitrate.rmfiles use RM to M4R. - Find the 30 Seconds with Trim: Turn Trim on and set a Start time and a Duration of 30 seconds or less, in seconds or
HH:MM:SS.sss. Note the timestamp in VLC or MPC-HC first. - Set File Compression: Use Constant Bitrate (8 to 384 kbps), Custom Bitrate, the five Variable Bitrate bands (20k-32k up to 96k-112k) or Specific file size; Quality Preset is the hands-off mode. Audio Codec is AAC. For a theme song, 128 kbps Stereo is ample for the Cook audio most RMVB files carry.
- Convert and Download: Click Convert and save the
.m4r. Your file is uploaded over HTTPS, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours. No sign-up, no watermark.
RMVB vs M4R
| Property | RMVB (source) | M4R (output) |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | RealMedia Variable Bitrate | MPEG-4 audio with Apple's ringtone extension |
| Developer | RealNetworks | Apple (the extension); MPEG (AAC and the container) |
| Video | RealVideo 9/10 era, variable bitrate | None |
| Audio | Usually RealAudio Cook; some later files AAC | AAC-LC |
| Typical content | TV episodes, anime, films from the 2000s | A tone of 30 seconds or less |
| Plays on | VLC, MPC-HC, PotPlayer, RealPlayer | iPhone ringtone; any AAC player |
Finding the Right Clip in an Episode
| What you want | Where it usually is | Trim tip |
|---|---|---|
| Opening theme | The first few minutes, sometimes after a cold open | Start on the first sung line; Duration 30 |
| Ending theme | Final minutes, under the credits | Start a beat before the chorus |
| A catchphrase | Anywhere; note the exact second | Duration 3-8, Audio Channel Mono |
| An eyecatch jingle | Midway through many anime episodes | A short Duration of 3-5 seconds |
Fansub releases often burn karaoke lyrics into the picture over the opening, but that is picture only; the ringtone carries just the sound.
Quality Expectations
RealAudio Cook is lossy, and so is AAC, so this is a second lossy generation. Matching the source is enough: a 30-second M4R at 128 kbps is about 480 KB (bitrate × seconds ÷ 8 = kilobytes). Turning the bitrate up to 320 kbps will not restore anything Cook removed; it only makes the file bigger.
Getting a Clean Loop from a Theme Song
A TV opening usually runs about a minute and a half, so 30 seconds means choosing a part, not the whole song. The chorus is the obvious pick because it is the part people recognise. Start the Trim right on the first beat of the phrase rather than on silence, and end it where a line finishes, so the tone sounds intentional when it starts again on the next ring.
Watch for narration or sound effects laid over the music in the first episode of a series; a later episode, or the ending credits, often has the clean version. Check the clip on headphones after downloading, because a quiet passage at the start can make the ringtone seem late.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need RealPlayer?
No. The RealAudio track is decoded on our servers with FFmpeg's libavcodec, the same decoder lineage that lets VLC and MPC-HC play RMVB. Upload the file as it is.
How long can the ringtone be?
Apple says ringtones can be up to 30 seconds long, and the GarageBand for iPhone guide puts the maximum for exported ringtones at 30 seconds. A 40-second figure appears in iTunes-era guides but not in Apple's current documentation.
Which audio track is used if the RMVB has two languages?
One track is written and there is no track picker; with two similar tracks the first is normally taken. Check the result before you sync it.
How do I set it as my ringtone?
Connect the iPhone to a Mac and drag the .m4r onto the iPhone in the Finder sidebar (macOS Catalina or later), or use iTunes on Windows. Choose it in Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone, or for one contact via Contacts > the person > Edit > Ringtone. Without a computer, save it to Files, import it into GarageBand on the iPhone, then Share > Ringtone.
Will it work on Android?
Android does not use M4R; it takes MP3 or OGG ringtones. Use RMVB to MP3 for an Android phone.
Can I keep the whole soundtrack instead?
Yes. RMVB to M4A extracts full-length audio for listening, without the ringtone extension.
Is my file private?
It is uploaded over TLS, processed on our servers and deleted automatically after a few hours. It is never shared or made public.
