SWF to HEIF — and When JPG or PNG Is the Better Target
A .swf file no longer plays in any current browser — Adobe ended Flash Player support on December 31, 2020, and started blocking Flash content on January 12, 2021. This tool reads the video inside the SWF on our servers and saves a single frame as a HEIF still image. Vector animations and games have no video inside and can't be converted. HEIF stores a lot of detail per kilobyte, but it only opens natively in Safari and on Apple devices, so it's the right target only when your photos live in an Apple library. If you want a still that opens anywhere, SWF to JPG or SWF to PNG is the safer pick — the comparison below shows when each one wins.
HEIF vs JPG vs PNG for a SWF Frame
| Property | HEIF | JPG | PNG |
|---|---|---|---|
| Container / codec | ISO/IEC 23008-12, HEVC-coded still | JFIF, baseline JPEG | PNG, DEFLATE (zlib) |
| Standardized | 2015 (MPEG) | 1992 (JPEG / ITU-T) | 1996 (W3C / IETF) |
| Compression | Lossy, very efficient | Lossy | Lossless |
| Transparency (alpha) | Yes | No | Yes |
| Native browser support | Safari 17+ only (~14% of users) | Effectively universal | Effectively universal |
| Windows / Android viewing | Needs codec extension | Built in | Built in |
| Typical file size | Smallest of the three | Small | Largest |
| Best for | Apple Photos / iPhone-native workflows | Sharing a still anywhere | A lossless master or transparency |
HEIF stores roughly half the bytes of an equivalent JPEG, but that efficiency comes from the HEVC codec, which most browsers never licensed. Per caniuse, about 14% of users — essentially Safari 17 and later on macOS and iOS — can open a .heif file in the browser. Windows 11 includes the HEIF Image Extension since version 22H2, and Windows 10 needs it installed manually, so HEIF is genuinely useful only when you control an Apple-centric viewing pipeline.
When to Pick HEIF
- Your photos live in Apple Photos, iCloud, or another iOS/macOS app and you want the SWF frame to drop in alongside iPhone captures.
- You're storing the still on Apple hardware that already has a licensed HEVC decoder, and small file size matters.
- You specifically need HEIF for an Apple-only archiving or editing workflow rather than for sharing.
When to Pick JPG or PNG Instead
- You'll email the still, post it to a website, or open it on Windows, Android, Chrome, Firefox, or Edge — use SWF to JPG, which opens essentially everywhere.
- You want a lossless master — use SWF to PNG.
- You're not sure where the image will end up. JPG is the lowest-friction default; reach for HEIF only when Apple compatibility is a known requirement.
HEIF vs HEIC at a Glance
Both are close relatives; the FAQ below covers when each matters.
| Property | HEIF (.heif) |
HEIC (.heic) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | ISO/IEC 23008-12 (generic container) | HEIF profile with an HEVC-coded image |
| Codec inside | HEVC (here) | HEVC |
| Apple default camera format | No | Yes, since iOS 11 (2017) |
| Transparency (alpha) | Yes | Yes |
| Opens natively in | Safari 17+, Apple devices | Safari 17+, Apple devices |

How to Convert SWF to HEIF
- Upload Your SWF File: Drag and drop the
.swfonto the page or click "+ Add Files" to browse. You can queue several SWF files and convert them with the same settings. - Pick the Frame to Capture: Open Advanced Options and keep Specific Frame selected, then set the Time (seconds) value to the moment you want — for example
2grabs the frame two seconds in. Switch to Multiple Screenshots to sample frames across the timeline and receive them as a zip. - Set Quality and Resolution (Optional): Choose a Quality Preset ("Very High" is the default) or a Specific file size, and optionally scale the output with Preset Resolutions or Width x Height. Leave Image resolution on "Keep original" to match the SWF's stage size.
- Convert and Download: Click "Convert" and download your HEIF file. No sign-up, no watermark.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this capture the whole Flash animation or just one frame?
Just one frame. HEIF here is a still image — the converter decodes the video inside the SWF and freezes the moment you choose. Set Specific Frame to a Time (seconds) value to pick that instant, or use Multiple Screenshots to grab several frames at once (delivered as a zip). The frame at time 0 is often just a background or pre-loader, so a second or two in usually lands on a fully composed image. If you need the motion back, convert to video with SWF to MP4 instead.
Is HEIF better than JPG for a SWF frame?
Only in narrow cases. HEIF compresses better — a .heif still is roughly half the size of an equivalent JPEG at similar quality — and supports an alpha channel. But it opens natively only in Safari 17+ and on current Apple devices (about 14% of browsers per caniuse), and Windows or Android viewers need a codec extension. JPG opens essentially everywhere. Pick HEIF when the image will stay inside an Apple ecosystem; otherwise SWF to JPG is the more compatible choice.
Why won't my HEIF file open on Windows or in Chrome?
Because in browsers HEIF is supported only by Safari 17 and later — Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and Samsung Internet never shipped native HEIF decoding, largely because the HEVC codec inside is patent-encumbered and costly to license. On Windows you can install the HEIF Image Extension (built in on Windows 11 since 22H2), but for a still that opens with no setup anywhere, convert SWF to PNG or JPG instead.
Is HEIF the same as the HEIC photos my iPhone takes?
They're close relatives. HEIF (.heif) is the generic ISO/IEC 23008-12 container, and HEIC (.heic) is the specific profile holding an HEVC-coded image that Apple has used as its default camera format since iOS 11 (2017). Both share the same container and HEVC codec family, so a .heif file lands in Apple Photos much like an iPhone capture. If you specifically need the .heic extension, use SWF to HEIC instead.
Will the HEIF look as sharp as the original?
As sharp as the video inside the SWF. That video was encoded at a fixed size, so a larger Preset Resolution makes a bigger image, not a sharper one; keep the original size for the best result.
Why is my HEIF blank or missing parts of the scene?
SWF is an interactive container, not a flat video, and only the video stream inside it can be read. Anything Flash draws itself — vector animation, menus, script-driven graphics — is not in the frame, and a SWF made only of those can't be converted (we tell you right after upload). The frame at time 0 is also often just a background or pre-loader. Raise the Time (seconds) value by a second or two, or try Multiple Screenshots to find a populated frame. For content that only appears after a click, a desktop Flash emulator such as Ruffle lets you interact with the file and screenshot it yourself.
What happens to my SWF file after the conversion?
Your file is uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically a few hours after conversion — no sign-up, no watermark, never shared or made public.
