Convert WEBA to M4R: Turn a Browser Audio Download into an iPhone Ringtone

A .weba file is WebM audio: an Opus or Vorbis stream in the WebM container that browsers and web apps use. It turns up when you save audio from a web-based recorder (Chromium-based browsers such as Chrome and Edge record audio as Opus in WebM), when a download tool saves only the audio of a web video, or when a web app exports a voice clip. None of that helps on an iPhone: custom ringtones must be M4R, AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container with the .m4r extension. This page decodes the WEBA, trims it to ringtone length and writes the M4R.

How to Convert WEBA to M4R

  1. Upload Your WEBA File: Drag the .weba onto the page or click "+ Add Files". Batch upload is supported, and the page works in mobile browsers, so you can do this on the phone you downloaded the file to.
  2. Choose a Bitrate: AAC is the only codec for M4R. Under File Compression, pick Constant Bitrate (8-384 kbps), one of the five Variable Bitrate bands (20k-32k up to 96k-112k), or a Custom Bitrate; Quality Preset leaves the exact rate to the encoder. Use 64-96 kbps for voice and 192-256 kbps for music.
  3. Trim to the Best 30 Seconds: Under Trim, enter the Start time of the part you want and a Duration of 30 seconds or less, in seconds or HH:MM:SS.sss. Apple says iPhone ringtones can be up to 30 seconds long, and the note under Duration says so too. Audio Sample Rate can stay on Original.
  4. Convert and Download: Click Convert and save the .m4r. Files travel over TLS, are processed on our servers and are deleted automatically after a few hours. No sign-up, no watermark.

From Opus to AAC: What Happens to the Sound

WEBA and M4R are both lossy formats with different codecs, so the conversion decodes the Opus (or Vorbis) stream and encodes a new AAC-LC stream. That is a second generation of lossy compression, and the rule for keeping it inaudible is simple: give AAC at least as many bits as the source had, ideally a little more. Encoding above the source rate will not recover anything that Opus discarded, but encoding well below it adds a second layer of artefacts.

A few specifics:

  • Sample rate. Opus always decodes at 48 kHz, so Original and 48000 Hz give the same result. There is no reason to resample to 44100 Hz for the iPhone.
  • Voice versus music. Browser voice recordings are often mono and modest in bitrate; 64-96 kbps AAC with Audio Channel on Original reproduces them comfortably. Music clips deserve 192-256 kbps.
  • Rights. Audio saved from a streaming site belongs to whoever made it. A personal ringtone from a song you bought is one thing; redistributing the file is another.

The result is a regular MPEG-4 audio file: ffprobe reports AAC LC with the major brand M4A , because M4R and M4A are the same kind of file and only the extension differs. If you want ordinary music rather than a tone, convert with WEBA to M4A.

WEBA vs M4R at a Glance

Property WEBA M4R
Container WebM (Matroska-based), audio only MPEG-4, the same container as M4A
Codec Opus or Vorbis AAC (AAC-LC)
Where it comes from Browser recorders, web apps, audio-only downloads Made for iPhone custom tones
Sample rate Opus: always 48 kHz Kept as the source unless you change it
Listed as an iPhone ringtone No Yes, once it is on the phone
Sensible length Any Up to 30 seconds, per Apple
Plays in Chrome, Firefox and Edge Yes Yes

Picking a Bitrate for Your Source

What the WEBA holds Constant Bitrate 30-second tone
Voice note from a web recorder 64 kbps ~240 KB
Clear speech or a podcast clip 96 kbps ~360 KB
Music, casual listening 192 kbps ~720 KB
Music you care about 256 kbps ~960 KB

Kilobytes are AAC bitrate in kbps multiplied by seconds and divided by 8, so even the top row is under a megabyte.

From the Download to the Ringtone List

Move the .m4r onto the iPhone by one of the usual routes. From a Mac (macOS Catalina or later), connect the phone, select it in the Finder sidebar and drag the file onto it. From Windows, use iTunes. On the iPhone itself, save the file to Files, import it into GarageBand and choose Share > Ringtone, which is Apple's documented route. Then select it under Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone, or assign it to a single caller in Contacts > the person > Edit > Ringtone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my iPhone not list the WEBA file as a ringtone?

Because iOS only offers custom ringtones that arrive as M4R files. Even where a browser can play WebM audio, the Ringtone list will not show it. Converting writes the same audio as AAC in an MPEG-4 container with the .m4r extension, which is what the phone looks for.

Will I lose quality going from WEBA to M4R?

A little in theory, since it is a lossy-to-lossy conversion. In practice, at or slightly above the source bitrate the difference is inaudible, especially through a phone speaker. Choose 192-256 kbps for music and 64-96 kbps for voice.

Does it matter whether the WEBA is Opus or Vorbis?

No. Both are decoded and re-encoded as AAC the same way. You do not need to know which one your file uses.

How long can the ringtone be?

Apple says ringtones can be up to 30 seconds long, and GarageBand trims longer ones automatically when exporting a ringtone. A 40-second limit is widely quoted from the iTunes era but does not appear in Apple's current documentation, so set Duration to 30 seconds or less.

Can I do the whole thing on my iPhone?

Yes. Open this page in Safari, upload the WEBA from Files, convert, and save the .m4r to Files. Then import it into GarageBand and use Share > Ringtone to add it to the phone's ringtones.

What should Android users do?

Android does not use M4R; ringtones there are usually MP3 or OGG. Use WEBA to MP3 and set the file from the phone's sound settings.

Is there a way back from M4R to WEBA?

Yes: M4R to WEBA turns a ringtone into WebM audio, for example to play it on a web page. Other routes into ringtone format are on the M4R converter.

What happens to my upload?

It is sent over an encrypted (TLS) connection, converted on our servers and deleted automatically after a few hours. Nothing is shared or published.
