3GPP (.3gpp) is the mobile-phone video container defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project — the same format as .3gp, holding low-resolution H.263, MPEG-4 Part 2, or H.264 video alongside AMR or AAC audio. OGV (.ogv) is the Ogg video container from the Xiph.Org Foundation, traditionally carrying Theora video with Vorbis audio. This tool re-wraps and re-encodes a mobile clip into an Ogg video. Because a 3GPP clip is already low-resolution, transcoding can shrink or re-package it but cannot add detail that was never recorded.

A few legacy toolchains, older media servers, and open-source projects standardized on the Ogg container years ago and still expect .ogv input. If your workflow specifically calls for Ogg, this conversion produces it. For anything new — sharing, embedding on a website, or general playback — MP4 or WebM is the more practical choice today.
No. 3GPP was designed for low-bandwidth 3G mobile delivery, so the source is already low-resolution. Re-encoding to OGV can change the container, codec, and file size, but it cannot recover detail the camera never captured. Setting a higher resolution only stretches the existing pixels.
In our testing, the OGV output defaults to VP8 video with Vorbis audio rather than Theora, which keeps the Ogg container while avoiding the deprecated Theora codec. You can switch the video codec to Theora under Show All Options if a downstream tool requires it specifically.
.3gpp different from .3gp?No. .3gpp and .3gp are two extensions for the same 3GPP container — both are built on the ISO Base Media File Format (MPEG-4 Part 12) and carry the same H.263/MPEG-4/H.264 video and AMR/AAC audio. This tool treats them identically.
They share the Ogg container from Xiph.Org but signal different content. By convention .ogg is used for audio-only Ogg files (typically Vorbis or Opus), while .ogv marks an Ogg file that carries video plus audio. This tool outputs .ogv because a 3GPP clip has a picture track; the audio rides inside the same Ogg container.
Yes. The 3GPP's audio track — usually AMR or AAC — is decoded and re-encoded to Vorbis inside the Ogg container, so the OGV plays with sound. Because it is a re-encode of already-compressed mobile audio, the result is a faithful copy of the source rather than an improvement.
A little, yes. Both 3GPP and OGV are lossy, so re-encoding decodes the mobile clip and compresses it again, which can soften fine detail slightly — separate from the fact that a low-resolution 3GPP was never sharp to begin with. The "Very High" preset keeps that generational loss minimal; if you have the footage at higher quality, convert from that rather than from an already-compressed 3GPP.
You can convert without signing up. Files are uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours — never shared or made public. The main practical limit on a large clip is upload size and time rather than any per-file cap, so a slow connection is usually what slows down a big conversion.
