ASF (Advanced Systems Format) is Microsoft's Windows-era media container — it usually wraps WMV video and WMA audio. MPEG-2 is the older broadcast and DVD-era video standard that DVD authoring software, set-top boxes, and some legacy hardware editors still expect. This converter re-encodes the video and audio inside your ASF file to an MPEG-2 stream so it drops into those MPEG-2-only workflows. If your goal is general modern playback or sharing rather than DVD/legacy compatibility, convert ASF to MP4 instead — H.264 in MP4 is smaller and plays nearly everywhere.

The realistic reason is compatibility, not quality. DVD-authoring tools, broadcast workflows, and some older hardware editors and players accept MPEG-2 but not Microsoft's WMV-in-ASF. If you only need the video to play on phones, browsers, or modern editors, MP4 with H.264 is the better target — it is smaller and far more universal. Choose MPEG-2 when a specific MPEG-2-only pipeline requires it.
Often it does the opposite. MPEG-2 is an older, less efficient codec than the H.264/HEVC and the WMV codec typically found inside ASF, so at a comparable quality setting the MPEG-2 output can be noticeably larger. If you need a smaller file afterward, compress the MPEG-2 result or lower the bitrate / Quality Preset during conversion.
No. Re-encoding is lossy and cannot add detail that was not in the ASF source — at best it preserves what is there, and a low preset will reduce it. Use the highest Quality Preset (or a high Constant Bitrate) if you want to keep the source as intact as MPEG-2 allows.
MPEG-2 is the compression standard (ISO/IEC 13818); .mpg and .mpeg are the common file extensions for an MPEG program stream that carries MPEG-2 video. The output here is an MPEG-2 stream in a .mpeg/.mpg file, which is what DVD authoring and broadcast tools expect.
