MPEG-2 is the DVD- and broadcast-era video standard (ISO/IEC 13818), normally stored as .mpg or .mpeg files. ASF (Advanced Systems Format) is Microsoft's streaming container for the Windows Media family. Converting MPEG-2 to ASF re-wraps and re-encodes your footage into the container that Windows Media Player, legacy Windows Media Services streams, and older Silverlight pipelines expect — useful when a Windows-centric workflow demands .asf rather than .mpg.

For most people the practical target is MP4, not ASF — if you do not specifically need a Windows Media file, convert MPEG-2 to MP4 instead. Choose ASF only when a Windows Media Player, Windows Media Services, or legacy Silverlight workflow requires the .asf extension. If you already know you want a .wmv rather than a generic .asf, use MPEG-2 to WMV.
ASF is the underlying container; WMV is the most common video codec carried inside it. A .wmv file is an ASF container whose .asf extension has been renamed to signal that it holds Windows Media Video. The bytes are the same kind of stream — the extension just tells software and users whether the file is video (.wmv), audio (.wma), or a mixed/generic stream (.asf).
By default the output uses H.264 video with WMA v2 audio, because H.264 is broadly compatible and the ASF container accepts it. The ASF specification is codec-agnostic, so this is valid. If you need a strictly Windows Media-native stream, open Advanced Options and switch the Video Codec to WMV 2, which is the classic codec older Windows Media tools expect.
No. Re-encoding can only preserve or reduce detail, never add it. The output inherits the resolution and sharpness of the source MPEG-2 file, minus whatever is lost in the second encode. Keeping the Quality Preset high and leaving the resolution unchanged keeps that loss small.
The ASF container has long included optional Microsoft DRM fields, which is one reason it survived in enterprise and broadcast-protection workflows. This converter produces a plain, unprotected ASF file — it does not add DRM, and it cannot remove protection from a file that was already encrypted at the source.
Almost the only reason is a Windows-centric requirement: a Windows Media Player target, a legacy Windows Media Services streaming setup, or an older Silverlight or enterprise pipeline that ingests .asf. For general playback on phones, browsers, and smart TVs, MP4 with H.264 is far more universal, so most users should convert to MP4 unless something specifically asks for ASF.
On Windows, Windows Media Player opens .asf natively. VLC media player plays ASF on Windows, macOS, and Linux, which is the easiest cross-platform option. Modern web browsers and most mobile players do not handle .asf, so if you need wide compatibility, convert to MP4 instead.
