.mpeg2 and .mpg are two names for the same family of files: an MPEG program stream defined by ISO/IEC 13818 (also published as ITU-T H.262). The .mpg extension is the short, three-character form that DOS and early Windows imposed, while .mpeg2 is a descriptive label some capture and authoring tools write out. This converter re-wraps your MPEG-2 source into a clean program stream with the conventional .mpg extension so DVD authoring tools, set-top boxes, and legacy media players that filter on the extension will accept it. It is not a downgrade — by default the video stays MPEG-2 (ITU-T H.262), not MPEG-1.

.mpeg2, .mpg, and .mpeg inputs are accepted, and batches convert with the same settings.The Video Codec defaults to MPEG-2 and the Audio Codec defaults to MP2 to match the DVD-Video / PAL DVB profile. Both can be changed under Advanced settings — switch the Video Codec to MPEG-1 if you specifically need a VCD-compatible MPEG-1 stream, or the Audio Codec to AC-3 for NTSC DVD authoring.
No, not by default. The Video Codec for .mpg output defaults to MPEG-2, so the conversion keeps the same ITU-T H.262 coding the source already used — it re-wraps the stream into a .mpg-named program stream rather than dropping to the older MPEG-1 codec. The only way you would lose the MPEG-2 ceiling is if you manually changed the Video Codec to MPEG-1, which caps practical resolution near 352×240 (SIF). For an MPEG-2 source there is no quality benefit to doing that.
.mpg is a container extension, not a codec. An MPEG program stream named .mpg can carry MPEG-1 video, MPEG-2 video, or both — the extension says nothing about which. MPEG-2 decoders are required to play back MPEG-1 streams, which is why a single .mpg extension covers both. This converter writes MPEG-2 into the .mpg wrapper unless you choose otherwise.
It runs the file through a real encoder rather than swapping the extension. That guarantees the output is a valid program stream regardless of how the input was muxed. If your source is already a clean MPEG-2 program stream, the result is effectively a faithful re-wrap at the same codec; renaming alone would risk leaving the container or timestamps malformed for strict DVD and broadcast tools.
For PAL DVDs and most DVB-S/T workflows, MP2 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer II) is the safe default and is accepted as a primary track on PAL discs. NTSC DVD-Video requires at least one LPCM or AC-3 (Dolby Digital) track, with MP2 allowed only as an extra — so switch the Audio Codec dropdown to AC-3 if an NTSC authoring tool rejects an MP2-only file.
Stay inside the DVD-Video envelope: 720×480 at 29.97i (NTSC) or 720×576 at 25i (PAL), with peak video bitrate at or below 9.8 Mbit/s. A practical sweet spot is roughly 5–6 Mbit/s VBR for about two hours on a single-layer DVD-5, rising to 7–8 Mbit/s for shorter or high-motion content. Set these under Resolution and the File Compression bitrate controls before converting.
Yes. Open Trim → Time Range to cut by start and duration, and use Preset Resolutions or Width x Height to rescale in the same conversion. If trimming is your main goal, Trim MPG is more focused; for the reverse direction or an explicit MPEG-2 target, see MPG to MPEG2. If you want a modern, web-friendly file instead, MPG to MP4 re-encodes to H.264 in an MP4 container.
Because the .mpg output keeps MPEG-2 coding, it will be similar in size to the source unless you constrain it. Use "Specific file size" or Constant Bitrate in the File Compression section to land on a target, or use Compress MPG when size reduction is the only goal and you do not need to change the extension.
