3GPP to ASF Converter

3GPP (.3gpp, the same container as .3gp) is the low-resolution mobile-video format defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project for 3G handsets — H.263, MPEG-4 Part 2, or H.264 video with AMR voice or AAC audio. ASF (Advanced Systems Format) is Microsoft's container, the one behind .wmv and .wma files and Windows Media Player. This tool transcodes a mobile clip into a Windows-Media container so it plays cleanly in the Windows ecosystem. Note up front: 3GPP is already low-resolution and this is a lossy-to-lossy re-encode, so the conversion can change the container and codec but cannot add detail that the phone never captured.

3GPP Format at a Glance

Property Value
Defined by 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), for GSM-based 3G handsets
Base format ISO base media file format (ISO/IEC 14496-12), the same base as MP4
Extensions .3gp and .3gpp — interchangeable names for one container
Video codecs H.263, MPEG-4 Part 2, H.264/AVC
Audio codecs AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AMR-WB+, AAC-LC, HE-AAC
MIME type video/3gpp (registered in RFC 3839)
Typical resolution Low — feature-phone clips are often 176×144 (QCIF) or 352×288 (CIF)
Designed for MMS, streaming, and storage over 2G/3G cellular links

ASF Format at a Glance

Property Value
Defined by Microsoft (publicly released 26 February 1998; latest spec v01.20.03, December 2004)
Also called Advanced Streaming Format, Active Streaming Format (older names)
Extensions .asf, plus .wmv (video) and .wma (audio-only) — same container, different labels
Typical video codecs Windows Media Video (WMV), VC-1; the container itself does not dictate the codec
Typical audio codecs Windows Media Audio (WMA)
Specification Still downloadable from Microsoft under a proprietary license
Native playback Windows Media Player; outside Windows it usually needs VLC or a codec pack
Designed for Streaming media in the Windows ecosystem, with stream prioritization and scalable media

How to Convert 3GPP to ASF

  1. Upload Your 3GPP File: Drag and drop or click "Add Files" to select your .3gpp or .3gp clip. Batch upload is supported, so a folder of old phone recordings converts in one pass.
  2. Pick a Quality Preset or Bitrate Mode: The default is the "Very High (Recommended)" Quality Preset, which preserves the source's low-resolution detail while transcoding into the ASF container (output defaults to H.264 video with WMAV2 audio). Switch to Specific file size to cap the output at an exact MB target, or Constant/Variable Bitrate for predictable sizes.
  3. Resize or Trim (Optional): Under Video resolution, keep original (recommended — upscaling 176×144 only adds blur), choose a Preset Resolution, or enter Width × Height. Use Trim → Time Range to clip the recording by start time and duration.
  4. Convert and Download: Click Convert. Files are uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours — no sign-up, no watermark, never shared.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is .3gpp the same format as .3gp?

Yes. .3gp and .3gpp are interchangeable filename extensions for one container defined by the 3GPP specification — the same ISO base media file structure, the same video/3gpp MIME type (registered in RFC 3839), and the same codec set. .3gp is the more common spelling in the wild, but the two are identical and this tool treats them the same way.

Will converting 3GPP to ASF improve the video quality?

No. Quality cannot be added by re-encoding. A 3GPP recording from a feature-phone-era handset is often 176×144 or 352×288 at a low bitrate, and that is all the detail the file contains. Converting to ASF changes the container and codec; it does not recover resolution that was never captured. Keeping the original resolution gives the most honest result — upscaling just enlarges blurry pixels.

What video and audio codecs does the ASF output use?

In our testing, the ASF output from this tool defaults to H.264 video with WMAV2 (Windows Media Audio v2) audio — which is the more compatible pairing for the file. Because ASF is a container rather than a codec, it can also carry WMV or VC-1 video and WMA audio; the AMR voice track common in 3GPP source files is transcoded automatically during conversion.

Why would I convert a mobile clip to a legacy Windows format?

The usual reason is a Windows-only workflow: an older video-editing or media tool that imports ASF/WMV but refuses 3GPP, a Windows Media Player setup, or an archive standardized on Microsoft formats. Outside those cases, ASF is a fading format with limited support beyond Windows. If your goal is a clip that plays on phones, browsers, and smart TVs, MP4 is the better target — see 3GPP to MP4.

Does ASF play outside Windows Media Player?

Not reliably on its own. ASF (.asf/.wmv) is a Microsoft format, and most non-Windows players — Apple QuickTime and Photos, default Android players, web browsers — do not handle it natively. VLC and similar third-party players or codec packs can open ASF on macOS and Linux, but if cross-platform playback matters, MP4 with H.264 is the safer choice.

Can I convert the ASF file back to a modern format later?

Yes. If you later need the clip in a widely supported container, you can convert ASF the other way — for example ASF to MP4. Bear in mind each lossy re-encode discards a little more detail, so converting back and forth repeatedly degrades quality. For a one-time future-proof copy, convert the original 3GPP straight to MP4 instead of routing through ASF.

Can I batch convert and trim several 3GPP files at once?

Yes. Upload as many .3gpp/.3gp files as you want and apply the same settings to all of them, with files processed in parallel on our servers and downloaded individually or as a single ZIP. To clip a recording during conversion, open Trim, choose Time Range, and enter a start time and duration in seconds or HH:MM:SS.sss — trimming before re-encode is faster than converting then editing separately.
