Image to 3GP Converter

The Image to 3GP converter wraps a still picture inside a 3GP video — the small, low-resolution container that GSM and early-3G handsets, MMS gateways, and legacy phone media galleries expect when they reject a plain photo. Upload one image and it becomes a silent clip that holds that single frame for a length you choose; upload several and they play back-to-back as a silent slideshow. It accepts 36 input formats, from everyday JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, GIF, TIFF, and BMP to raw camera files (CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, DNG, and more), so there is no "export to JPG first" step. In 2026 almost nothing still needs 3GP — if the target is a modern phone, browser, or social feed, Image to MP4 produces a sharper, more compatible clip. Reach for 3GP only when a genuinely old device or workflow accepts nothing else.

From a Still Image to a Silent Clip

A photo has no timeline and no sound, so three controls decide what the resulting 3GP looks like:

  • Duration sets how long each image stays on screen — from a single frame (1/60s) up to 10 seconds, defaulting to 5 seconds. This is what determines the clip's length: one image at 5 seconds makes a roughly 5-second video.
  • Merge strategy chooses the output shape. "Merge images" joins a batch into one continuous slideshow; "Video per image" writes a separate .3gp for each photo.
  • Background Color fills the letterbox bars when a photo's aspect ratio does not match the video frame. It defaults to white; pick black or another color if white borders clash with your image.

Because the source is a still image, there is no audio to encode — the 3GP comes out silent. The container can normally carry an AMR-NB voice track, but there is nothing to fill it here.

How to Convert Image to 3GP

  1. Upload Your Image File: Drag and drop or click "+ Add Files" to add pictures in any of the 36 supported formats — JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC/HEIF, AVIF, TIFF, BMP, GIF, PSD, or raw camera files (CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, DNG, RAF, RW2, and more). Queue several for a slideshow.
  2. Set the Duration: Open Advanced Options, then the Duration dropdown, and choose how long each frame holds — from a fraction of a second to 10 seconds (default 5). This sets the clip's total length.
  3. Pick a Merge Strategy and Resolution (Optional): Choose "Merge images" for one combined slideshow or "Video per image" for separate files. Keep the original size or set a Fixed Resolution, and set a Background Color for the letterbox bars.
  4. Convert and Download: Click Convert and save your .3gp file. No sign-up, no watermark.

Image to 3GP vs Image to MP4 in 2026

3GP earned its place when phones had QCIF screens and metered, per-kilobyte data plans. Hardware has moved on: every current phone, browser, and messaging app handles MP4, and 3GP's small frame makes a high-resolution photo look soft on any modern screen. Convert to 3GP only when a specific old device or MMS workflow demands it — otherwise pick the sharper, universally-playable option.

Property 3GP output MP4 output
Container standard 3GPP TS 26.244 MPEG-4 Part 14
Default video codec H.264 (H.263 / MPEG-4 Part 2 also selectable) H.264 (H.265 / VP9 / AV1 also selectable)
Practical resolution Small, QCIF/CIF-era by design Up to 4K / 8K
Plays in browsers No — needs VLC or a phone player Yes, natively everywhere
Built for 3G feature phones, MMS Modern phones, web, social, email
Choose it when An old handset accepts nothing else Almost every other case

For a short looping animation rather than a held frame, Image to GIF is the better fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an image-to-3GP file have any sound?

No. A still image carries no audio, so the output is a silent video of one frozen frame — or a silent slideshow if you upload several. The 3GP container can hold an AMR-NB or AAC track in general, but there is nothing to encode when the source is a picture.

How long will my 3GP clip be?

The length comes entirely from the Duration you set, not from the file. One image at the default 5 seconds makes a roughly 5-second clip. With "Merge images", total length is the number of images multiplied by the per-image duration — 12 photos at 3 seconds each is a 36-second slideshow.

Which codec does the 3GP use, and will an old phone play it?

3GP is defined by 3GPP TS 26.244 and built on the ISO base media file format (the same base MP4 uses). It carries H.263, MPEG-4 Part 2, or H.264/AVC video — the codecs 3G-era handsets were designed to decode. This tool defaults to H.264; switch to H.263 or MPEG-4 in the Video Codec dropdown for the oldest devices.

Why does my 3GP look lower quality than the original image?

That is the format working as intended. In our testing, a 1080×1920 photo held for 5 seconds at the Very High preset produced a 3GP of only a few hundred kilobytes — 3GP targets low-bandwidth mobile playback, so it is far more compressed and lower-resolution than MP4. To keep detail, resize the image to your target dimensions first, or convert to MP4 instead.

Should I convert my image to 3GP or MP4?

Pick 3GP only when a genuinely old feature phone, an MMS workflow, or a legacy media menu accepts nothing but .3gp. For a widely-playable, sharper still or slideshow on any modern device, Image to MP4 is the better target.

Can I combine several photos into one 3GP slideshow?

Yes. Upload all the images, choose "Merge images", and set a per-frame Duration. They play in upload order as one continuous silent clip. Choose "Video per image" instead to get a separate .3gp for each photo.

What resolution will the 3GP be?

By default the tool keeps the image's proportions and scales it to fit, padding with your chosen Background Color where the aspect ratio does not match. You can also pick a Fixed Resolution. Remember that 3GP was built for small QCIF (176×144) and CIF (352×288) screens, so a very large frame defeats the format's purpose and only bloats the file.

What happens to my uploaded file?

Files are uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically a few hours after conversion — no sign-up, no watermark, never shared or made public.
