Convert MOV to M4R: Turn an iPhone Video into a Ringtone
Some of the best ringtones are things you recorded yourself: your child laughing, the dog barking at the door, a friend's terrible singing, the crowd at a gig. On an iPhone those moments live in the Camera app's videos, and the Camera app saves video as MOV, Apple's QuickTime format. The iPhone will not use a MOV as a ringtone, though. Custom tones must be M4R files: AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container with the .m4r extension. This page takes the MOV, keeps the audio track, drops the picture, trims the clip to ringtone length and writes the M4R. Free, no sign-up, no watermark, and it works in mobile browsers.
How to Convert MOV to M4R
- Upload Your MOV File: Drag the
.movonto the page or click "+ Add Files". On an iPhone, choose the video from Photos or Files; large videos can take a moment to prepare before the upload starts. Batch upload is supported. - Set the Audio Quality: AAC is the only codec for M4R. Under File Compression, choose Constant Bitrate (8-384 kbps), one of the five Variable Bitrate bands (20k-32k up to 96k-112k), or a Custom Bitrate; Quality Preset leaves the exact rate to the encoder. Use 192-256 kbps for music and 96-128 kbps for voices.
- Trim to 30 Seconds or Less: Switch Trim from Unchanged and enter a Start time and a Duration, in seconds or HH:MM:SS.sss. Apple says iPhone ringtones can be up to 30 seconds long; the note under Duration repeats it. Leave Audio Channel and Audio Sample Rate on Original.
- Convert and Download: Click Convert and save the
.m4r. The MOV is uploaded over TLS, processed on our servers and deleted automatically after a few hours.
What's in an iPhone MOV
MOV is the QuickTime File Format, the ancestor of the MPEG-4 container that M4A and M4R use. An iPhone video holds a video track, encoded as HEVC or H.264 depending on Settings > Camera > Formats (High Efficiency or Most Compatible), and an audio track that is usually AAC. The format setting changes the picture, not the sound, so both kinds of file make the same ringtone.
During conversion the video track is discarded and the audio is decoded and encoded as a fresh AAC-LC stream at the bitrate you choose. It is a re-encode rather than a copy, so pick a bitrate at or above the original's; 256 kbps is a safe ceiling for a 30-second clip. The output is a standard MPEG-4 audio file, which ffprobe reports as AAC LC with the major brand M4A . M4R and M4A are the same kind of file; the .m4r extension is what tells the iPhone it is a tone. For an ordinary audio file instead, use MOV to M4A.
iPhone and Mac Video Sources
| Where the MOV came from | What to expect | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Camera video | Audio usually AAC; converts directly | Trim the clip in Photos first to cut the upload |
| A Live Photo saved as a video | A clip of a few seconds | Short enough to use whole, ideal as a text tone |
| Mac screen recording (Screenshot or QuickTime Player) | Sound only if audio recording was switched on | Play the MOV first to check it has audio |
| QuickTime Player movie recording | Video with microphone audio | Converts directly |
| A store-bought movie or episode | Usually DRM-protected | Cannot be converted |
Getting the file off the phone: AirDrop it to a Mac, or in Photos for Mac use File > Export > Export Unmodified Original to get the original .mov. If your copy arrives as an .mp4 instead, for example after an export from another app, use MP4 to M4R; it works the same way.
Picking the Moment
Apple's support article on custom ringtones says ringtones can be up to 30 seconds long, and GarageBand shortens longer ones when it exports a ringtone. A 40-second limit is widely quoted from the iTunes era, but it is not in Apple's current documentation, so plan for 30 seconds.
Play the video, note when your moment starts, and enter that as the Trim Start time with a Duration that covers the moment plus a second of breathing room. Trim decides what is encoded, not what is uploaded, so a long 4K video is uploaded in full. To save time, trim the video in the Photos app first (Edit, then drag the ends of the frame viewer) and save it as a new clip. If you have already made an M4R and want to nudge its start or end, Trim M4R does it on a waveform.

Size of a 30-Second Tone
AAC bitrate in kbps multiplied by seconds and divided by 8 gives kilobytes: 64 kbps is about 240 KB, 128 kbps about 480 KB, 192 kbps about 720 KB and 256 kbps about 960 KB. Phone-recorded audio rarely needs more than 192 kbps, and anything at or above it sounds the same through the iPhone speaker.
Setting It as Your Ringtone
Use one of the usual routes to put the .m4r on the phone:
- Mac: connect the iPhone, select it in the Finder sidebar (macOS Catalina or later) and drag the file onto it.
- Windows: add it to the iPhone with iTunes.
- iPhone only: save the
.m4rto Files, import it into GarageBand and choose Share > Ringtone, the route Apple documents.
Then go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone and select it. For a single caller, open Contacts, choose the person, tap Edit and pick it under Ringtone or Text Tone. A recording of someone's voice as their own contact ringtone is hard to beat.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the picture end up in the ringtone?
No. M4R is audio only, so the video track is dropped. Your original MOV stays as it is on your phone or computer.
Do High Efficiency (HEVC) videos work?
Yes. The camera format setting changes how the picture is compressed, and the picture is discarded anyway. The audio track converts the same way in both cases.
Why is my M4R silent?
The MOV has no audio, or the sound was muted. Mac screen recordings, for example, only contain sound when audio recording was switched on. Play the original first; if it is silent there, there is nothing to extract.
Can I convert a movie I bought on iTunes?
No. Store purchases and rentals are typically protected with Apple's FairPlay DRM, which encrypts the streams so they play only on authorised devices. Only unprotected recordings and exports can be converted.
Can I do everything on my iPhone?
Yes. Open this page in Safari, pick the video from Photos, trim and convert, and save the .m4r to Files. Then import it into GarageBand and use Share > Ringtone to add it to your ringtones.
My tone does not appear in the Ringtone list. What went wrong?
Check that the file ends in .m4r, that it is 30 seconds or shorter, and that it reached the phone through the Finder, iTunes or GarageBand. A file saved to Files is not added to the list until it goes through one of those routes.
What if I want the audio for Android or as a normal file?
Android does not need M4R; its ringtones are usually MP3 or OGG, so use MOV to MP3. Other source formats are listed on the M4R converter.
What happens to my video?
It is uploaded over an encrypted (TLS) connection, converted on our servers and deleted automatically after a few hours. Nothing is shared or made public.
