.odg is an OpenDocument Graphics drawing — vector shapes, connectors and text frames written as XML inside a ZIP package by LibreOffice Draw or Apache OpenOffice Draw. .ogv is Ogg Video, the video profile of the Ogg container developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation as a completely open, royalty-free format. This page renders the drawing and holds each page as a silent frame inside that container — the right choice when a royalty-free pipeline, a wiki that only accepts Ogg, or an old open-source toolchain demands it, and an awkward one almost everywhere else.

With several files, Merge strategy decides the outcome: "Merge images" writes one clip holding each drawing in turn, "Video per image" writes one .ogv per upload..ogv expects Theora inside it, so switch to Theora if the destination is at all particular about what an Ogg Video file should contain..ogv. Theora and VP8 are both royalty-free, but they are not interchangeable from the reader's point of view. Theora is what the .ogv name has meant since 2008, and a tool that advertises Ogg Video support almost certainly means Theora-in-Ogg. VP8 in an Ogg container is legal and modern decoders handle it, but it is unusual enough that a strict or elderly reader may simply refuse the file. Because this page preselects VP8, the single most useful thing you can do before converting is decide which one your destination actually wants.
Rate control differs between them too. Theora takes a quality value on its own scale where higher is better, while VP8 is steered by quality bounds rather than a single CRF number. For a still drawing held for a few seconds, neither choice produces a large file — the frame size you pick under Video resolution matters far more than either quality control.
.ogv play in a browser?Not by default any more, and that is the format's central problem rather than anything about this conversion. Ogg/Theora decoding was disabled by default in Chrome 120 and removed from Chromium at 123, Edge followed at 122 and Firefox disabled it at 126; Safari never supported it at all. A file that played in a 2015 browser can show a "format not supported" error in the same browser today. For a clip a browser will actually play, use ODG to WebM or ODG to MP4.
Theora when the destination says "Ogg Video" and you want no argument about it. VP8 when the receiving software is modern and you would rather have the newer codec's efficiency. VP8 is what this page starts on, so a deliberate switch is needed for the traditional pairing — and if a tool rejects the file without explanation, the codec inside is the first thing to change.
No. A drawing has no sound to encode, so the Audio Codec group does not render and the file carries a video track only. Ogg would normally pair video with Vorbis or Opus audio; here there is simply nothing to pair it with. Add a track in a video editor afterwards if a platform insists on one.
No. Each drawing page is a still, held on screen for the Image Duration you set and emitted at 1 fps, with no transitions between pages. That is the whole nature of turning a static document into video — nothing in an .odg describes motion, so nothing can be encoded as motion.
Every page becomes its own held frame inside the same .ogv, in page order. Three pages at the 5-second default give a 15-second clip. If you want one file per page, save the pages as separate .odg files in LibreOffice Draw, upload them together and set Merge strategy to "Video per image".
The drawing's page rendered at 300 DPI unless you say otherwise, which for A4 is roughly 2480 x 3508 — portrait, and larger than any player needs. Setting a Fixed Resolution scales that render down, which is the sharp direction, and the Background Color, which opens on White, fills whatever pillarboxing a portrait page leaves in a landscape frame.
Only for a specific reason: a royalty-free requirement, a wiki or archive that accepts Ogg and nothing else, or an old toolchain you cannot change. Theora has been superseded by VP9 and AV1 in WebM for the open web, and by H.264 in MP4 for general playback. If you have a free choice, take one of those instead.
