OGV is the Ogg video container, almost always carrying Theora video and Vorbis audio — an open-web format that modern browsers have walked away from (Chrome removed Theora decoding in version 123, March 2024). RM is RealMedia, the proprietary streaming container RealNetworks introduced in 1997 for the dial-up era. Converting one to the other is a niche, legacy-to-legacy job: you would only do it to feed an old RealPlayer-based archive or workflow. For a clip that plays everywhere today, convert OGV to MP4 instead; for a modern open-web video, convert OGV to WebM.

Both formats are dead ends for the modern web, so this is a lossy re-encode that can only lose quality, never add it. Theora is already decoded out of Chrome, and RM needs RealPlayer or a codec pack such as VLC or K-Lite to play at all. The output here uses the H.263-based RealVideo RV10/RV20 line, which predates H.264 and compresses worse than the Theora source you started with. The single legitimate reason to want RM is compatibility with an existing RealPlayer-based system or archive. If your goal is simply a video that opens everywhere, MP4 (H.264) is the correct target, and WebM is the right open-web choice.
This converter writes RealVideo RV10/RV20 (the H.263-based RealVideo 1.0 / G2 line) with RealAudio 1.0. It does not produce RV30 or RV40, the later H.264-based RealVideo versions — open-source encoders, including the FFmpeg pipeline this tool uses, can decode RV40 but cannot encode it.
No. Going from Theora to RealVideo RV10/RV20 is a lossy re-encode between two older codecs, so the output can only match or fall below the source. In our testing, an RM export at the default Very High preset was visibly softer than the Theora original at a comparable file size, because RV10/RV20 predates the more efficient compression in Theora.
RealPlayer plays RM natively, but you do not need it. VLC, MPlayer, PotPlayer, and Windows Media Player with the K-Lite codec pack all decode RealMedia. Web browsers and most mobile players do not support RM out of the box, which is why converting to MP4 is usually the better fix for sharing.
For almost every modern use, yes. Convert OGV to MP4 for an H.264 file that plays on phones, browsers, and TVs, or convert OGV to WebM for an open-format file that streams in current browsers. Choose RM only when an old RealPlayer-based system specifically requires it.
Not at full quality. Because every step is a lossy re-encode, converting RM back to MP4 or any other format will not restore the detail lost in the OGV-to-RM pass. Keep your original .ogv file if you may need a clean copy.
