What plays an OGV file?

VLC and most FFmpeg-based players open OGV regardless of the internal codec. Firefox plays Ogg natively. Note that Chrome removed the Theora codec in version 123 (March 2024), though it still supports the Ogg container. For a file that plays in every browser, convert RM to MP4 instead.

Will the VP8 default play in Firefox?

In our testing, VP8 inside an Ogg container plays reliably in VLC, but Firefox only decodes VP8 in a WebM container — its Ogg support expects Theora. If you need browser-native playback of a VP8 stream, convert RM to WebM, which is VP8/VP9's native container. Choose the Theora codec here if you specifically want a browser-friendly .ogv.

Why convert RM to OGV instead of keeping the RealMedia file?
