RW2 is the raw photo format written by Panasonic Lumix cameras — full-resolution, high-bit-depth sensor data straight off the chip. ICO is the Windows icon container, where each image is at most 256×256 pixels. This converter renders the raw photo and downscales it into an icon you can use as a Windows application icon or a website favicon. It is a deliberate one-way trip: a multi-megapixel raw becomes a tiny, standard-color-depth icon.

An RW2 holds many megapixels of 12–14-bit sensor data; an ICO image is capped at 256×256 and stored at standard 8-bit depth. The raw's wide exposure latitude is baked into a fixed rendering and the resolution is shrunk dramatically. That is fine for an icon, but it is not a way to archive a photo. To keep a normal viewable picture, convert to RW2 to JPG or RW2 to PNG instead.
For a website favicon, 256×256 (the 256P preset) is the safe upper bound — browsers and Windows downscale it to the size they need. If you only want classic small icons, 32×32 and 16×16 are the traditional taskbar and browser-tab sizes. Because ICO is a multi-resolution container, a 256-pixel icon already scales down cleanly for most uses.
A raw file is mosaiced Bayer data, not a finished picture. It has to be demosaiced and rendered — white balance, gamma, and tone curve applied — before it can be displayed. Our pipeline applies a neutral default rendering, so the result can look flatter or differently white-balanced than the in-camera JPEG preview your Lumix showed you. That preview was Panasonic's own processing baked into the camera.
A standard rendered RW2 is fully opaque, so there is no transparency to carry over. ICO itself does support a 32-bit mode with an 8-bit alpha channel, but a photo has no alpha to preserve. If you need a transparent icon, mask the image first in an editor, export a PNG with alpha, then convert that.
Yes. Add multiple .rw2 files and they are processed with the same resolution and bit-depth settings, then returned as individual .ico files. This is handy when you are generating a set of app icons from a batch of shots.
The conversion does not touch your source file — only a copy is uploaded and processed, and the upload is deleted automatically after a few hours. Your original RW2 keeps its full 12–14-bit latitude for editing in Lightroom, Capture One, RawTherapee, or darktable. The ICO is a derived output, not a replacement for the raw.
The practical constraint is upload size and time, not your computer — RW2 files are large, so a slow connection is usually the bottleneck, not the conversion itself. The page accepts standard Lumix raws; very large multi-file batches simply take longer to upload over the encrypted connection before processing begins.
