Re-encode a Windows Media .asf file — normally WMV video with WMA audio — into a DivX clip that older standalone players and AVI-friendly editors will accept. This is a full transcode, not a rewrap: both streams are decoded and encoded again, so expect the usual generation loss that comes with moving between two lossy formats. DivX remains genuinely useful for DVD-era set-top boxes and legacy editing tools; if your target is anything made in the last decade, ASF to MP4 is the better conversion. That last row is the practical limit of the format rather than of this converter: AVI and MPEG-4 ASP were finished designs before any of those features existed. If you need them, ASF to MP4 or ASF to MKV is the right target.
Some, unavoidably. WMV and MPEG-4 ASP are different codecs, so the video is fully decoded and re-encoded rather than copied across, and every lossy-to-lossy transcode adds a generation of loss. Keeping Quality Preset at Very High (Recommended), or choosing a constant bitrate at or above the source rate, keeps the result visually close to the original. Aggressive presets trade visible detail for a smaller file, and on the older, blockier MPEG-4 ASP codec that trade shows up sooner than it would on H.264.
They are two implementations of the same thing. Both encode MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile video, and both decode on the same certified hardware. DivX is the commercial brand that popularised the format around 2000; Xvid is the open-source encoder that grew up alongside it. A file produced here plays on Xvid-capable devices and vice versa, so pick whichever extension your player or workflow expects — ASF to Xvid is the same conversion under the other name.
Because DivX is a codec, not a container, and it needs a wrapper. AVI is the wrapper the entire DivX ecosystem was built around, so that is what gets written — with a .divx extension carrying exactly the same bytes an .avi would. Set-top DivX players expect this pairing specifically, which is why the combination survives at all in an era of MP4 and MKV.
Yes. The WMA track from the ASF is decoded and re-encoded to MP3, the default for this target, so it plays on DivX hardware that has never heard of Windows Media Audio. The Audio Codec dropdown offers alternatives including AAC, AC3, MP2, Vorbis, and PCM. Stay on MP3 unless you know your player handles something else — MP3-in-AVI is the pairing legacy devices are most reliably built for. If the source has no audio, the output is silent; nothing is invented.
Choose DivX only when a specific older device or editor requires it. For phones, smart TVs, browsers, and current editing software, H.264 in MP4 is smaller at the same quality and far more widely supported — use ASF to MP4. Going the other direction, DivX to MP4 modernises an existing DivX library. DivX earns its place with DVD-era hardware, not with anything recent.
Work through the three limits that catch people out. First, resolution: many DivX-certified DVD players implement only the standard-definition Home Theater profile and cannot handle anything near HD, so drop Video resolution to 480p or 576p. Second, bitrate: some devices stall above a few megabits per second, so try Constant Bitrate at a modest rate. Third, audio: keep the Audio Codec on MP3, since AAC and the PCM variants are frequently unsupported on that generation of hardware.
Yes, in two ways. Specific file size takes a figure in megabytes and aims the encoder at it, which is what you want for a fixed disc or upload budget. Target file size (%) works relative to the source instead, so 50% asks for roughly half. Both work better with some headroom — MPEG-4 ASP has no CRF-style quality lever to fall back on, so a very tight target is met by lowering quality until it fits.
Not in any way modern players expect. AVI has no standard soft-subtitle or chapter structure, so subtitles must be burned into the picture beforehand and chapter marks simply have nowhere to live. If your source has separate subtitle or chapter data you want to keep, convert to ASF to MKV instead — Matroska was designed for exactly that and is well supported by current players.
