DivX is a codec brand — MPEG-4 Part 2 video from the DVD-rip era, normally carried in an AVI file with an MP3 soundtrack. ASF (Advanced Systems Format) is a container, Microsoft's streaming-era wrapper and the thing that .wmv and .wma files actually are underneath. Converting DivX to ASF re-encodes the video and re-wraps it for Windows Media Player, Windows Media Services, and older Windows-only software that will not touch an AVI. This page defaults to H.264 video with WMA v2 audio; if you need something classic Windows Media Player recognises as Windows Media Video, switch the Video Codec to WMV 2 before converting.

.wmv — an ASF file carrying Windows Media Video (usually with WMA audio)..wma — an ASF file carrying only Windows Media Audio..asf — the generic extension, used when the contents are anything else.Microsoft's own documentation is explicit that .wma and .wmv files are identical to .asf files apart from the extension and MIME type. Because this page defaults to H.264 rather than a Windows Media codec, the generic .asf extension is the honest label for what comes out. Choose WMV 2 in the Video Codec list and you have produced, in every technical sense, a Windows Media Video file — you can rename it to .wmv and Windows will treat it as one.
One more thing that surprises people: ASF is where Windows Media DRM lives. The container defines the framework for it. That does not mean your output is protected — nothing here applies DRM — but it does explain why some ASF files you find elsewhere refuse to play without a licence.

Only the extension and the MIME type. ASF is the container; a file gets called .wmv when it holds Windows Media Video and .wma when it holds Windows Media Audio alone, and .asf covers everything else. Microsoft's specification treats them as the same format. In practice the extension matters because Windows file associations and some applications route on it, so if a tool insists on .wmv, select WMV 2 as the Video Codec here and rename the downloaded file.
It depends entirely on what has to open the file. WMV 2 is the safe answer if the destination is classic Windows Media Player, Windows Media Services, or a piece of Windows software from that era — those expect a Windows Media codec inside an ASF and may reject anything else. H.264 is the better answer if you only need the ASF wrapper and care about picture quality per megabyte, and VLC, MPC-HC and ffmpeg-based tools will all decode it. We checked the default output: it probes as an H.264 video stream alongside a WMA v2 audio stream inside a valid ASF container.
Yes, a little, and unavoidably. Your DivX source is already lossy MPEG-4 Part 2, and the server always re-encodes — there is no stream copy — so you are stacking a second lossy generation on top of the first. Keeping File Compression on the "Very High (Recommended)" Quality Preset and leaving Video resolution on Keep original keeps that generation loss hard to see. Setting a small Specific file size does the opposite: it forces the encoder to throw away detail to hit your number.
Yes. The Audio Codec list on this page includes MP3, and ASF can carry it, so selecting MP3 avoids re-encoding the audio into a different lossy format. The catch is the same as with video: some Windows Media tooling expects WMA inside an ASF and handles MP3-in-ASF poorly. If the file is destined for anything other than legacy Windows software, leaving it on WMA v2 or picking AAC is usually less trouble.
No. ASF is the container that defines the Windows Media DRM framework, but a DRM licence has to be deliberately applied by a packaging tool, and nothing here does that. The file you get is an ordinary unprotected ASF that any capable player can open. It also carries no watermark.
Because ASF was designed in the mid-1990s for Windows Media streaming and never became a cross-platform format. No browser plays ASF natively, iOS and Android have no built-in support, and smart TVs generally ignore it. VLC will play it on Windows, macOS and Linux, and Windows Media Player handles it on Windows. If the file needs to travel, ASF is the wrong destination.
Only if something specific asks for it. Both formats are legacy: DivX peaked in the early 2000s, ASF is a Windows-only streaming container from 1996. If your real goal is a video that plays on phones, browsers, TVs and editors, DivX to MP4 is the conversion you want — the same H.264 video in a container everything understands. If you have inherited ASF files and want to modernise them, ASF to MP4 goes the other direction.
