ASF (Advanced Systems Format) is Microsoft's container for Windows Media — usually WMV video with WMA audio, fine in Windows Media Player but awkward to pull frames from in most editors and phones. This tool decodes a frame at a timestamp you choose and saves it as a HEIF still: High Efficiency Image File Format, standardised by MPEG as ISO/IEC 23008-12, holding an HEVC-coded picture. The output is an image, not an animation and not a video — one frame, no audio. Files are uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours — no sign-up, no watermark, never shared or made public.

If you only know a frame number rather than a time, divide by the clip's frame rate: frame 750 in 25 fps footage sits at 750 ÷ 25 = 30 seconds. Old .asf streams are often 15 fps or lower, so check before you calculate.

MDN's own guide to image file types for the web lists APNG, AVIF, GIF, JPEG, PNG, SVG, WebP, and several legacy formats — and does not include HEIF at all. That absence is the clearest summary of its position: excellent as device storage, wrong as a web format. For a still you intend to share, ASF to JPG or ASF to PNG is the practical target.
.wmv here directly, or use WMV to JPG if you want a universally readable still.Some ASF files carry Windows Media DRM. The container was built with rights management in mind, and a protected file refuses to decode outside an authorised player on a licensed machine — there is no online workaround, so the conversion will simply fail. A .wma file is the audio-only form of the same container and has no video track, meaning there are no frames to grab. And if the goal is just a clean still you can send to anyone, HEIF's narrow support makes it the wrong destination; Video to JPG, which accepts ASF among many other inputs, gets you there with none of the compatibility caveats.
Only when the still is staying somewhere that reads HEIF comfortably — an iPhone, an iPad, a Mac, or a recent Windows machine with the HEVC components installed. In exchange you get a file commonly around half the size of an equivalent JPEG, with support for higher bit depth and transparency that JPEG has never had. Everywhere else the compatibility cost outweighs the saving, and ASF to JPG is the sensible choice.
Nearly. HEIF is the container standard, ISO/IEC 23008-12, and it can hold pictures coded with HEVC, AV1, or even JPEG. HEIC is the name Apple uses for the specific combination of that container with HEVC-coded images, which is exactly what this tool produces. A .heif file from here and a .heic file from an iPhone hold the same kind of payload, and software that opens one generally opens the other — a rename is sometimes all a stubborn application needs.
No. HEIF here is a single still image, and image formats have nowhere to store a soundtrack, so the WMA audio in the ASF is discarded. If you need the sound as well, extract it separately with ASF to MP3 — the frame grab and the audio are two independent jobs.
No tool can add detail the source does not contain. The still is a decoded video frame, and ASF normally carries lossy WMV, so the image inherits whatever compression artefacts and resolution the clip had. HEVC coding inside HEIF is efficient at preserving that frame, but preserving is all it does — a 480p clip yields a 480p still, blocking and all.
With Image resolution left on Keep original, the still matches the video's native frame size: a 1280x720 ASF gives a 1280x720 image. Because ASF predates modern capture resolutions, many real-world files are 640x480 or smaller. To shrink the result for the web, pick a Preset Resolution before converting, or run the output through the Image Resizer afterwards.
Leave Frame Selection on Specific Frame and type the moment into Time (seconds). The field accepts decimals, so 8.2 means eight seconds and two hundred milliseconds in, and 0 captures the opening frame. If you would rather find the moment visually first, open the clip in VLC, read the position from Tools then Media Information, and enter that time here.
Frame Selection was set to Multiple Screenshots, which walks the entire clip at the chosen Capture Rate — at one image per second, a three-minute recording produces about 180 stills. Switch back to Specific Frame for a single image. The multiple-screenshot mode is genuinely useful for finding the right moment in unfamiliar footage: sample every ten seconds, pick the frame you want, then re-run with Specific Frame at that timestamp for the clean version.
Not literally every frame. The fastest Capture Rate available is 0.1 seconds, which samples ten images per second — enough for inspecting a golf swing or a UI transition, but below the frame rate of 25 or 30 fps footage. Note also that a still per frame multiplies quickly: a one-minute clip at ten images per second is 600 files. If you need a true frame-by-frame export, that is a job for desktop software rather than a browser upload.
Your file travels over an encrypted (TLS) connection, is processed on our servers, and is never shared or made public.
