Grab a HEIF Still from an ASF Video

ASF (Advanced Systems Format) is Microsoft's container for Windows Media video — usually WMV video with WMA audio, playing in Windows Media Player but resisting frame capture in most editors and phones. This tool decodes one frame at a timestamp you choose and saves it as a single HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format, ISO/IEC 23008-12) still — the same HEVC-based format an iPhone uses for photos. The output is one picture, not an animation: HEIF here holds a single frame and no audio, so the ASF's soundtrack is discarded.

How to Convert ASF to HEIF

  1. Upload Your ASF File: Drag the .asf (or .wmv) file onto the box or click "+ Add Files." Several clips can queue at once. Files are uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically a few hours after conversion — no sign-up, no watermark, never shared.
  2. Choose Specific Frame or Multiple Screenshots: Open Advanced Options and find the Frame Selection group. "Specific Frame" grabs one image at the moment you type into the "Time (seconds)" field — leave it at 0 for the opening frame, or enter 12 for the frame at the 12-second mark. "Multiple Screenshots" walks the timeline at the "Capture Rate" you set.
  3. Set Quality Preset and Resolution (Optional): "Quality Preset" controls HEVC compression for the HEIF still — Very High (Recommended) keeps the frame sharp; raise it toward Highest for near-lossless output at a larger size. Leave "Image resolution" on Keep original to match the video's native size, or pick a Preset Resolution to downscale.
  4. Convert and Download: Click "Convert." A single frame downloads as one .heif file; a multi-frame sequence downloads as a ZIP with each image numbered in order.

Walk-through: Picking the Right Frame and Format

The Frame Selection group is the one setting that changes what you get back, so it's worth understanding before you convert.

  • You know the exact moment — use Specific Frame and type the time in seconds. The field accepts decimals, so 2.5 captures two-and-a-half seconds in. If you only know a frame number, divide it by the video's frame rate: frame 750 in 25 fps footage is 750 ÷ 25 = 30 seconds.
  • You want several stills or a scene overview — use Multiple Screenshots with a Capture Rate of a few seconds. A 5-minute clip at one image per 10 seconds returns about 30 evenly spaced HEIF files in a ZIP.
  • The still has to open everywhere — HEIF is the wrong target. It opens on Apple devices (iOS 11+/macOS High Sierra+) and on Windows only after installing Microsoft's HEIF Image Extensions, and no mainstream browser renders it in a web page. For a frame grab you can email, post, or drop into any editor, use ASF to JPG or ASF to PNG instead.

Common Errors and How to Fix Them

  • "The HEIF file won't open / shows a blank thumbnail." The viewer lacks HEVC decoding. On Windows, install HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store; on a Mac or iPhone it opens natively. To skip the dependency entirely, export to ASF to JPG.
  • "My file ends in .wmv, not .asf." WMV and ASF are the same container; WMV just signals it carries video. Upload the .wmv here directly, or use the WMV to JPG tool if you want a universally readable still.
  • "The extracted frame is blurry or soft." Motion blur is baked into the footage by the camera, and the Quality Preset only controls compression, not source sharpness. Pull several frames with Multiple Screenshots and keep the cleanest.
  • "The image looks low-resolution at full size." ASF is an older streaming format and many .asf files are encoded at 480p or 360p. HEIF can't add detail the source lacks — frame size tracks the video's resolution, so a 320×240 stream yields a 320×240 still.

When This Doesn't Work

Some ASF files carry Windows Media DRM — the container was built to support digital rights management, and protected files refuse to decode outside an authorized Windows Media Player session. There's no online workaround; you'd need to play the file on the licensed device. A .wma file has no video track at all, so there are no frames to grab. And because HEIF support is so narrow, if your goal is simply a clean still you can share anywhere, a frame pulled with Video to JPG (which accepts ASF among many inputs) is the more practical path.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I convert ASF to HEIF instead of JPG?

Only if the still is staying inside the Apple ecosystem or a recent Windows machine with HEVC support. HEIF stores the frame with HEVC compression, so the file is roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG and can hold higher bit-depth color. The catch is compatibility: HEIF opens natively only on Apple devices and on Windows with Microsoft's HEIF Image Extensions, and no mainstream browser displays it inline. For a frame that opens everywhere, ASF to JPG is the safer choice.

Does the HEIF file include the ASF's audio?

No. HEIF here is a single still image, so the WMA audio track in the ASF is discarded. If you need the soundtrack, extract it separately with ASF to MP3 — the frame grab and the audio are two different jobs.

Will the frame look better than the original video?

No tool can add detail that isn't in the source. The extracted frame is a decoded video frame, and ASF/WMV is already a lossy codec, so the still carries whatever compression artifacts and resolution the clip had. HEVC encoding inside HEIF is efficient, but it preserves the frame — it can't sharpen or upscale it. A 480p clip yields a 480p still.

What resolution will the HEIF image be?

With "Image resolution" left on Keep original, the still matches the video's native frame size — a 1280×720 ASF yields a 1280×720 image. ASF predates today's high-resolution capture, so many real-world files are 480p or smaller. To shrink the output for the web, pick a Preset Resolution before converting or run the result through the Image Resizer.

How do I grab one exact frame instead of a sequence?

Select "Specific Frame" in the Frame Selection group and type the moment into the "Time (seconds)" field — the tool returns a single HEIF at that timestamp. The field takes decimals, so 8.2 means eight seconds and 200 milliseconds in. Leave it at 0 to capture the opening frame. If you'd rather scrub visually first, open the clip in VLC, read the position from Tools → Media Information, then type that time here.

Are my uploaded files kept private?

Files travel over an encrypted connection, are processed on our servers, and are deleted automatically a few hours after conversion. Nothing is shared, made public, or used for anything other than producing your HEIF still, and no account is required.
