AV1 is the modern, royalty-free codec from the Alliance for Open Media; MPG is the decades-old MPEG program stream that nearly every player and set-top box can decode. This is a deliberate downconvert: you trade AV1's efficiency for the universal playback of a legacy format. Be clear-eyed about the tradeoff — the output will be larger and no sharper than the source, because re-encoding lossy AV1 into lossy MPEG-2 cannot recover detail. If your goal is quality or modern compatibility, keep AV1 or convert to AV1 to MP4 instead.

No. AV1 is already a lossy, highly efficient codec, and MPEG-2 (the default codec inside .mpg here) is lossy and far less efficient. Re-encoding from one lossy format to another cannot add back detail — at best it preserves what's there, and any aggressive bitrate or resolution reduction will visibly degrade it. Convert to MPG only when you need legacy compatibility, not for a quality gain.
Because MPEG-2 needs roughly 2-3x the bitrate of H.264, and AV1 is more efficient still. In our testing, a 60-second 1080p AV1 clip around 8-10 MB expanded to well over 40 MB as an MPEG-2 program stream at a visually comparable bitrate. That size jump is inherent to the older codec, not a fault of the converter.
MPEG-2 for almost everything — DVD-Video, broadcast ingest, SVCD, and HD playback on legacy hardware. Choose MPEG-1 only when you specifically need Video CD (VCD) compatibility at 352×240 (NTSC) or 352×288 (PAL) for very old standalone players. MPEG-2 is the safer default and the one this tool selects automatically.
By default the output carries MPEG-1 Audio Layer II (MP2), the standard audio payload for MPEG program streams and the format expected by most legacy MPG players. AC-3 and other codecs are available in Advanced Options if your target device or DVD workflow requires them.
Not on its own. The .mpg is just the video file; a DVD-Video disc also needs a VIDEO_TS folder with IFO/BUP/VOB files and (usually) menus. Author the MPG into a compliant disc image with software such as DVDStyler, ImgBurn, or Nero, then burn that image. Keep the MPEG-2 video bitrate at or below 9.8 Mbit/s and use 720×480 (NTSC) or 720×576 (PAL).
Yes. For phones, browsers, and current editors, MP4 with H.264 plays everywhere and stays far smaller than MPEG-2. Use AV1 to MP4 instead. Reach for MPG only when the destination is genuinely old — a pre-2010 set-top box, a DVD/VCD authoring chain, or a broadcast system that ingests MPEG-2 program streams.
No. MPEG-1 has been patent-free since 2017 and the essential MPEG-2 patents expired by 2018, so encoded MPG files can be created, distributed, and played without codec royalties. This is one reason archival and open-source workflows still accept MPEG program streams.
