AV1 is the modern, royalty-free video codec from the Alliance for Open Media (released 2018), built for efficient HD and 4K streaming. VOB (Video Object) is the legacy container that DVD-Video discs use, carrying MPEG-2 video and Dolby Digital or MP2 audio. Converting AV1 to VOB is a downconvert: high-efficiency AV1 is re-encoded into the DVD-era MPEG-2 form that DVD authoring tools require, so this exists for one reason — burning footage to a standard DVD. A bare .vob is not a finished disc on its own; see the FAQ for what else a playable DVD needs.

No. A .vob holds the multiplexed MPEG-2 video and audio, but a DVD player also needs the navigation structure — the VIDEO_TS folder with its .IFO (information) and .BUP (backup) files — to find and play titles. This converter produces the VOB stream; to make a disc that plays in a set-top DVD player, load the VOB into DVD authoring software (such as DVDStyler, DVD Flick, or ImgBurn) to build the full VIDEO_TS structure, then burn it.
Usually yes, often by a wide margin. AV1 is roughly twice as efficient as the MPEG-2 codec DVDs require, so re-encoding the same footage to MPEG-2 at a watchable bitrate produces a much bigger file. DVD-Video also caps video at 9.8 Mbit/s, so even a high-bitrate source is held to that ceiling. The size jump is the price of DVD compatibility — there is no way to put native AV1 on a DVD-Video disc.
The DVD-Video spec does not allow AAC or Opus in a VOB. The legal options are MP2, AC-3 (Dolby Digital), DTS, and linear PCM. MP2 is the safe default for stereo playback on any DVD player; choose AC3 if you want Dolby Digital surround that matches what commercial discs ship with.
Yes, and it is unavoidable. DVD-Video is standard definition only — 720×480 (NTSC) or 720×576 (PAL) — so a 1080p or 4K AV1 source is downscaled to fit. On top of that, MPEG-2 is far less efficient than AV1, so fine detail and smooth gradients soften compared with the original. Keep the bitrate generous (closer to the 9.8 Mbit/s ceiling) to minimize added compression artifacts.
Match the region of the player you plan to use. NTSC (720×480) is standard in North America and Japan; PAL (720×576) is standard across most of Europe, Australia, and parts of Asia. Most modern players and ripping tools handle both, but a region-correct frame avoids vertical scaling and keeps motion smooth.
Only convert if you specifically need a physical DVD that plays in a set-top player. For everything else — phones, smart TVs, web, archiving — keep AV1 or use our AV1 to MP4 converter, which preserves HD resolution and far smaller files.
