AVCHD is the HD camcorder format Sony and Panasonic introduced in 2006: H.264/AVC video paired with Dolby AC-3 or uncompressed LPCM audio inside an MPEG-2 transport stream (the .mts / .m2ts files from the camera). OGA is the audio-only Ogg container, and on this tool it holds Vorbis — Xiph.Org's open, royalty-free lossy codec. This converter is an audio extraction: it pulls the soundtrack out of your AVCHD clip, encodes it to Ogg/Vorbis, and discards the video. The output is a sound file only, with no picture.

The result is a sound file with no picture. If you want to keep the video, convert AVCHD to a video format instead.
No. AVCHD audio is usually Dolby AC-3, which is already lossy. Re-encoding a lossy source to Vorbis (also lossy) is a lossy-to-lossy step, so it cannot add back detail — it only re-compresses what is already there. If your camcorder recorded uncompressed LPCM instead, encoding to Vorbis will noticeably shrink the file while staying close to the original at higher bitrates.
Both are the Ogg container holding a Vorbis audio stream. Since around 2007 the Xiph.Org Foundation has recommended .oga for audio-only Ogg files, with .ogg reserved for Ogg Vorbis audio in practice; RFC 5334 (2008) formalized the audio/ogg media type and the .oga extension. If a player rejects one extension, the AVCHD to OGG variant produces the same Vorbis audio under the .ogg name.
OGA/Vorbis plays in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and Safari 18.4+ and in most open-source players, but older Apple desktop apps and some hardware players don't decode Vorbis. If you need the widest possible compatibility — car stereos, old phones, legacy software — AVCHD to MP3 is the safer target. Choose OGA when you specifically want an open, royalty-free format for the web or for open-source tools.
Only the audio is kept, so the output is far smaller than the source clip. Vorbis is efficient at low and medium bitrates: at 96–128 kbps it typically matches MP3 quality at a higher bitrate, so you can keep files small without an obvious drop in sound. Picking Mono and a lower sample rate shrinks voice recordings further; if you want a lossless extraction instead, use AVCHD to FLAC.
