AVCHD is the HD camcorder format from Sony and Panasonic — H.264 video with Dolby AC-3 audio wrapped in an MPEG-2 transport stream, saved as .mts or .m2ts inside an AVCHD folder. TS (.ts) is the same MPEG-2 transport stream container used for broadcast television and HLS streaming. Because both already carry H.264, the conversion stays in the same codec family: the video is re-encoded (there is no stream-copy passthrough) at a visually-lossless default preset, and the result is a plain .ts that broadcast encoders, IPTV players, and streaming pipelines accept.

It can. AVCHD audio is usually Dolby AC-3 or linear PCM. Our TS output defaults to AAC, which most players and HLS pipelines expect, so the audio is re-encoded by default. If your target needs Dolby Digital, set the audio codec to AC-3 in Advanced Options — the track is still re-encoded, but it stays in the AC-3 family instead of switching to AAC.
All three are MPEG-2 transport streams carrying H.264 (or MPEG-2) elementary streams — the difference is mainly the extension and context. .mts and .m2ts are the AVCHD camcorder variants, while plain .ts is the generic transport stream used for broadcast and HLS. Converting AVCHD to .ts produces a container that broadcast tools and .ts-based streaming workflows recognize directly.
TS is the historical segment format for HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) — adaptive streams are split into short .ts chunks referenced by an .m3u8 playlist — and it tolerates transmission errors well thanks to its 188-byte packet structure, which is why broadcast (DVB, ATSC, ISDB) relies on it. For general playback on phones, browsers, and editors, MP4 is the more universal and lower-overhead choice.
Yes. VLC, MPV, and most IPTV players and set-top boxes play .ts files directly. Some general-purpose players and video editors prefer MP4 or MKV; if a .ts file will not open in your editor, convert AVCHD to MP4 or MKV instead.
That is normal camcorder behavior, not damage. AVCHD cameras record to a FAT32 card, which caps any single file at 4 GB, so a long take is automatically split into consecutive .mts (or .m2ts) segments inside the AVCHD folder. Each segment converts to its own .ts here; the converter does not stitch them together, so to end up with one continuous transport stream you would join the clips before or after converting.
It depends on the source and the codec you pick. AVCHD audio is usually Dolby AC-3, which can be stereo or 5.1. The TS output re-encodes audio to AAC by default; if your target expects a Dolby track, set the audio codec to AC-3 in Advanced Options. Multichannel handling follows the source layout, so if surround matters, check the channel count on the finished file rather than assuming it carried through.

This converter outputs a single, complete .ts file — a valid transport stream, but not pre-segmented — so you or your packaging tool still split it into segments for adaptive delivery.
