A .cr3 is Canon's RAW photo: 14-bit unprocessed sensor data in an ISO-BMFF/CRX container that most apps and browsers cannot open. A .jfif is just a baseline JPEG — the same 8-bit lossy image bytes as a .jpg, only with a different extension. Converting CR3 to JFIF demosaics the RAW and bakes it into a universally viewable image. If you only need a sharable photo, this is the conversion you want; if you still plan to edit highlights and shadows, keep the CR3 as your master.

If a site specifically wants .jpg, use convert CR3 to JPG instead — identical image, more familiar extension.JFIF is the right answer when a destination asks for JPEG data, but it is not the only place a CR3 can go. Some, and it's unavoidable by design. JFIF is lossy 8-bit JPEG, while CR3 is 14-bit RAW, so the wide dynamic range and editing latitude of the original are reduced to a baked-in image. For a one-time export to a viewable photo that's usually fine. In our testing, a "Very High" preset keeps the JFIF visually close to the rendered RAW for normal viewing, but if you later need to recover highlights or shadows, edit the CR3 first and export afterward.
CR3 is unprocessed Canon sensor data in a CRX-coded ISO-BMFF container, not a finished image. It needs demosaicing and RAW-aware software (Canon Digital Photo Professional, Lightroom, or a converter like this one) before it becomes a normal picture. Converting to JFIF performs that demosaic and produces a file any viewer can open.
Not reliably. JFIF is a minimal interchange format that doesn't natively carry Exif, and the two application markers are mutually exclusive in the JPEG stream. Camera settings, lens info, and GPS coordinates stored in the CR3 may be dropped. If preserving shot metadata matters, keep the CR3 as your archive copy.
For a normal sharable photo, JFIF and JPG are identical — pick whichever extension the destination wants. Choose PNG only if you need a lossless image or transparency; PNG files are much larger and gain nothing for an opaque photograph that was already 8-bit after conversion.
CR3 arrived with the EOS M50 in 2018 and became the RAW format Canon's mirrorless EOS R line and its later DSLRs record. Anything older — the EOS DSLRs of the mid-2000s through the 2010s — writes CR2 instead, which is a different, TIFF/EP-based file despite doing the same job. If your file ends in .cr2 rather than .cr3, use the CR2 pages; the extension tells you which generation you have.
C-RAW is a setting, not a separate format. Canon bodies that write CR3 let you record either standard RAW (compressed without loss) or C-RAW, a compact mode that applies lossy compression to shrink the file substantially — but both land in the same .cr3 container and both convert here the same way. The practical difference is headroom: a C-RAW file has already discarded some data, so it tolerates aggressive exposure and shadow recovery slightly less well before the export. Once it becomes an 8-bit JFIF, that distinction stops mattering.
Three reductions stack up. The RAW's roughly 14 bits per channel are cut to 8, the mosaiced sensor data becomes a finished RGB image, and JPEG's lossy DCT compression then discards detail the eye is least likely to notice. A full-resolution Canon RAW that occupied tens of megabytes routinely exports to a JFIF a small fraction of that size at a high quality setting. Nothing is wrong — that size gap is the entire point of exporting, and it is also why you keep the CR3 if you might want to re-edit.
