Short answer: yes. A .jfif file is a JPEG. JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is the wrapper convention that tells a decoder how the JPEG data is laid out, and it is what almost every "JPEG" on your disk already uses — the extension is just spelled differently. So converting Adobe DNG camera RAW to JFIF develops your negative into an ordinary, universally viewable JPEG that you can rename to .jpg at any time. .jfif — some medical, scanning, and document-management pipelines still name the format that way..jfif files (Windows and some browsers have historically saved downloaded JPEGs with that extension) and want your own exports to match..jpg avoids questions..jfif even though it can decode the bytes inside..jpg, .jpeg, and .jfif output through the same JPEG encoder with the same settings, so only the filename differs..dng files onto the page or click "+ Add Files". Yes. Both extensions describe the same JPEG bitstream with the same image/jpeg MIME type, so renaming does not re-encode anything and cannot damage the image. Every mainstream viewer, browser, and editor opens the file either way — the rename is purely cosmetic.
It comes from how the operating system maps the image/jpeg MIME type to a file extension. When that mapping points at JFIF, downloaded and saved JPEGs land with a .jfif name even though nothing about the file has changed. It is a naming quirk, not a different format.
You lose the RAW latitude permanently, and some pixel data to JPEG compression. A DNG carries 12–16-bit linear sensor data whose exposure, white balance, and tone curve are still adjustable; the JFIF is an 8-bit-per-channel render of one interpretation, compressed lossily. At the "Very High" preset the visible result is excellent — but blown highlights and crushed shadows can no longer be recovered, so finish your RAW edits first.
Yes, if there is any chance you will re-edit. The JFIF is a flattened delivery copy and you cannot reconstruct the negative from it. The standard workflow is to archive the DNG as the master and treat exported JPEG/JFIF files as disposable.
Choose a lossless target. JPEG — and therefore JFIF — is always lossy, so for archiving or further editing without generation loss use DNG to TIFF or DNG to PNG. Both keep every rendered pixel at the cost of a much larger file.
Treat metadata as unreliable across a RAW-to-JPEG render and check the output if it matters. JFIF and Exif are two different application-marker conventions that coexist in the same JPEG file, so camera fields such as focal length or shutter speed can be dropped or rewritten during export. If provenance metadata is important, verify it in the converted file before deleting anything.
Use "Specific file size" in the File Compression group and enter your ceiling — for example 2 MB — rather than guessing with quality presets. Combining that with a resolution reduction gives a much better-looking result at a small target size than compression alone, because fewer pixels need fewer bits.
No. Every save re-compresses lossily, so repeated edit-and-save cycles visibly degrade the image. Edit from the DNG, or export once to TIFF/PNG for the editing round trip and produce the JFIF only as the final delivery file. To shrink an existing JPEG without re-developing the RAW, use the JPEG compressor.
