JPG to AV1 Converter

This tool turns a JPG photo into a short AV1 video clip: it holds your still image on screen for a duration you choose and encodes those frames with the AV1 codec. There is no motion and no audio — it is a single picture stretched into a playable video stream. AV1 is a modern, royalty-free codec with excellent compression, so this is a niche conversion: it makes sense when you need a small, modern-codec placeholder or filler clip rather than an image file. If you actually want an AV1-compressed still image, you want JPG to AVIF instead — AVIF is the image format built on the same codec.

How to Convert JPG to AV1

  1. Upload Your JPG File: Drag and drop your JPG, JPEG or JFIF image onto the page, or click "+ Add Files". You can add several images at once.
  2. Set the Duration: Under Image Duration, pick how long the still is held — the default is 5 seconds per image, and the dropdown ranges from a single frame up to 10 seconds.
  3. Choose Quality, Background and Merge: Set the Quality Preset (Constant Quality or Constraint Quality), pick a Background Color used to pad non-matching aspect ratios, and choose whether to Merge images into one clip or output a Video per image.
  4. Convert and Download: Click "Convert" and save your .av1 clip. No sign-up, no watermark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the output an AV1 video or an AVIF image?

A video. This page encodes your still picture as an AV1 video clip and downloads it as a .av1 file. AVIF is the separate still-image format built on the same codec — for that, use the JPG to AVIF converter.

Why would I turn a single photo into an AV1 video?

It is genuinely niche. The common reasons are a small modern-codec placeholder or filler clip in a pipeline that already plays AV1, a looping background that must match an AV1 production, or testing that an AV1 player handles a known frame. For a sharable photo you would normally keep it as an image.

Does the AV1 clip have any sound?

No. A still image carries no audio, so the output is video-only. If you need narration or music over the picture, convert to a container that carries audio — for example JPG to MP4 — and add the soundtrack in a video editor.

How long is the video, and can I change it?

The default is 5 seconds for a single image. You set this under Image Duration, which ranges from a single frame (a fraction of a second) up to 10 seconds per image. When you merge several images, each one is shown for its chosen duration in sequence.

Will a plain .av1 file play everywhere?

Not reliably. AV1 the codec is widely decodable in current Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Opera and on recent Apple hardware, but a raw .av1 elementary stream is unusual — most players and browsers expect AV1 inside MP4, WebM or MKV. For broad compatibility, convert to JPG to WebM or JPG to MP4 instead.

Why is AV1 encoding slower than other codecs?

AV1 trades encoding speed for compression efficiency, so AV1 encoders are typically several times slower than H.264 or VP9 encoders at comparable settings. For a one-frame clip the file is tiny, so the wait is short; the slowdown is mainly noticeable on long, high-resolution video.

What does the Background Color setting do?

When your image's aspect ratio does not match the output frame, the converter pads the empty space with the Background Color (Black by default). It only appears in those padded margins; it does not tint the picture itself.

Are my uploaded images kept after conversion?

Files are uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically a few hours after conversion. There is no sign-up, no watermark, and your images are never shared or made public. In our testing, a single-image clip stays very small because AV1 encodes only one frame with no motion between frames — most of the duration costs almost nothing in file size.
