Convert MP4 to WebP online, free. This MP4 to WebP converter pulls still frames out of an MP4 or M4V video and saves each one as a .webp image: a single frame at a time you choose, a series of frames across the clip, one contact-sheet grid, or exactly the frames you pin. Set the quality, lossy or lossless, and the output size, then download the images.
How to convert MP4 to WebP
- Upload the MP4 file: Drag an .mp4 or .m4v file onto the page or click Add Files. Several videos can be queued and are processed with the same settings.
- Choose the frames: Frame Selection is One frame by default, taken at the Time you enter in seconds (0 is the first frame). Switch to Many frames for a series, Frame grid for one image that tiles the frames, or Pinned frames to list exact timestamps.
- Set quality and convert: Leave Image Compression on the Very High preset and Lossless? on No for a normal web image, or choose Yes for a pixel-exact frame. Click Convert and download the .webp file, or the ZIP when a job produces several frames.
Frame Selection
One frame writes a single WebP from the moment you give in seconds; decimals such as 12.5 are accepted and 0, the default, is the first frame. Many frames takes a series between a From and a To time, spaced either One frame every interval — from 1/60 of a second up to 10 seconds, 1 second by default — or Exactly a number of frames (12 by default) spread evenly across the range. Frame grid uses the same spacing but renders every frame into one image: you set the Columns (1 to 12, default 4) and the Sheet width (1920 pixels by default), and can switch off the timestamp under each frame and the file name and length printed at the top. Pinned frames takes a list of times in seconds and exports just those frames.
Image Compression and Lossless
The Quality Preset ladder runs from Highest to Lowest; Very High, the default, encodes the WebP at quality 95. Image Quality (%) lets you type any value from 1 to 100 instead. Target file size (%) and Specific file size (8 MB is pre-filled; units B, KB or MB) make the encoder fit a budget rather than a quality level, and with Auto Scale on it may also reduce the pixel dimensions to get there — the route to take when a thumbnail must stay under an upload limit. Lossless? is No by default. Set it to Yes for frames of text, user interfaces or line art, where lossy compression blurs edges; a lossless WebP is noticeably larger than the lossy version of the same frame.
Image resolution
Keep original, the default, writes the frame at the video's own pixel size. Preset Resolutions offers 144p up to 4320p (8K), and its "Use as max resolution" switch turns the preset into a ceiling so that smaller videos are not enlarged. Resolution Percentage scales to 1 to 100 % of the source. Width, Height, or Width x Height take exact values in pixels or percent, and a single dimension keeps the aspect ratio. In Frame grid mode the Sheet width is the only size that applies and this group is ignored.
When to convert MP4 to WebP
- You need a poster frame or thumbnail for a video player, a product card or an article header, in the image format browsers download fastest.
- A tutorial or lecture recording has to become a set of slides, or one contact sheet for notes and review.
- You want a specific instant from a clip — a goal, a chart, a title card — as an image you can paste anywhere WebP is accepted.
Output: what to expect
The result is a still image, never an animation: each selected frame becomes one .webp file, and Many frames or Pinned frames jobs arrive as a ZIP. Quality can only be as good as the source frame: the MP4's own compression artefacts and motion blur are kept. At the default quality a lossy WebP is normally a little smaller than a JPEG of the same frame; Google's own comparison puts the saving at 25 to 34 % at equal quality.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the WebP a still image or an animation?
A still. This page writes one image per selected frame. For a looping animated WebP, make a GIF first with MP4 to GIF and then use GIF to WebP.
Which frame does One frame take?
The frame at the time you type in seconds, counted from the start of the file; 0 gives the first frame.
Can I extract every frame of a section?
Yes. Choose Many frames, set One frame every 1/30 or 1/60 of a second to match the clip's rate, and keep the From and To range short: a minute of 30 fps video is 1,800 images.
Does the WebP keep transparency?
No. MP4 video carries no alpha channel, so every extracted frame is opaque.
Does XConvert keep my video?
Files are processed on our servers and deleted automatically after a few hours.
