MPEG to MPEG — the Repair Pass

Most people who land on a same-format MPEG conversion are not trying to change the format. They are trying to make a file behave: it stutters, it opens with no sound, an editor refuses to import it, the seek bar is the wrong length, or half the clip is missing after a partial download. A full re-encode is a blunt instrument, but it fixes a surprising share of those faults, because it rebuilds the file from decoded frames rather than trusting whatever headers and timestamps the original carried.

It is not free, though. Our servers always decode and re-encode — there is no stream-copy path — so you pay one generation of lossy compression for the repair. That is a good trade on a file that does not currently play and a bad one on a file that plays fine. Uploads travel over an encrypted connection, are processed on our servers, and are deleted automatically after a few hours. No sign-up, no watermark.

Symptom, Cause, and What a Re-encode Actually Fixes

Symptom Usual cause Does a same-format pass fix it?
Plays but the duration is wrong or seeking jumps Missing or broken system header and timestamps in the program stream Yes. The output is muxed from scratch with fresh timing
No audio at all, picture fine A DTS or AC-3 track the player cannot decode Yes — set Audio Codec to MP2 or MP3 and the track is re-encoded into something universal
Editor rejects the import Non-standard GOP structure, or an unexpected codec inside the .mpeg wrapper Usually. The output is a clean MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 stream at a normal GOP
Stutters or drops frames on an old player Bitrate spikes above what the hardware buffer can take Often. Use Constant Bitrate rather than a preset, and reduce the resolution
First few seconds are green, grey or blocky The file starts mid-GOP, typically from an interrupted capture or a partial download Partly. Trim past the damaged opening and the rest re-encodes cleanly
Half the file is missing Truncated download or a failed capture No. Nothing can reconstruct data that was never written
Video is combed or shows horizontal tearing on motion Interlaced source No. There is no deinterlacing step in this pipeline; the fields stay as they are
Picture is stretched or squashed Anamorphic source with a non-square pixel aspect No — and resizing makes it worse. Any explicit resize flattens the pixel aspect to 1:1. Set an exact Width x Height that matches the intended display shape

How to Re-encode an MPEG File

  1. Upload Your MPEG File: Drag and drop, or click "+ Add Files". Both .mpeg and .mpg are accepted; they name the same program stream. Batch uploads share one set of settings.
  2. Choose the Video Codec: MPEG-2 is preselected and is the right choice for almost every repair — it is the more capable of the two and handles anything above VideoCD resolutions. MPEG-1 is the other entry, useful only when a specific old device demands it.
  3. Choose an Audio Codec: MP2 is the default and the most widely decoded option inside a program stream. If your problem is silence, this is the setting that fixes it. MP3, AC3 and DTS (DCA) are also available when you need to keep a surround mix in its own codec.
  4. Set a Bitrate, Trim, then Convert: For a repair, Constant Bitrate is the most predictable File Compression mode — pick a rate your player is comfortable with. Use Trim with a start time and duration to skip a damaged opening. Video resolution starts on Keep original. Click Convert and download.

What the Program Stream Holds

Property MPEG program stream (.mpeg / .mpg)
File signature Pack header start code 00 00 01 BA at the very beginning
Structure Packs containing PES packets, interleaved video and audio, with SCR, PTS and DTS timing
Designed for Error-free storage media — DVD, VideoCD, hard disks
Sibling format The MPEG transport stream (.ts, .m2ts), designed for lossy broadcast links instead
Video codecs it carries MPEG-1 Video, MPEG-2 Video (ITU-T H.262)
Audio codecs it carries MP2, MP3, AC-3, DTS, LPCM
Subtitle tracks None as soft text. DVD subtitles are bitmap streams that live in the disc structure, not in a loose file
Chapters None
Maximum practical efficiency Poor by modern standards; MPEG-2 needs several times the bitrate of H.264 for the same picture

That last row is the honest caveat on the whole page. If the file is being repaired so it can live on for another decade, repairing it into MPEG keeps it big and awkward. MPEG to MP4 performs the same rebuild and lands on H.264, which is far smaller and plays natively in browsers, on phones and on smart TVs. Stay on MPEG only when a DVD authoring tool, a broadcast workflow or an old piece of hardware genuinely requires it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a re-encode really repair a broken file?

It repairs a specific class of faults: bad container timing, an unreadable audio codec, a GOP structure an editor dislikes, and bitrate spikes. It does that because the output is muxed from scratch rather than patched. What it cannot do is invent missing data — a truncated file stays truncated, and a stream with corrupt frames in the middle will re-encode those corrupt frames faithfully.

The first seconds are garbled. How do I get rid of them?

Use the Trim control. Set a start time a second or two past the damage and a duration covering the rest. Because the whole file is re-encoded rather than cut on keyframes, the new clip starts exactly where you asked with a clean opening frame — there is no black gap and no audio offset.

Why is there no deinterlace option?

Because this pipeline has none. Interlaced footage — most DVD rips, most standard-definition broadcast captures — keeps its field structure through the conversion, comb artefacts and all. MPEG-2 at least codes fields natively, so the file is not made worse. If you need progressive output, deinterlace locally before uploading.

My picture came out stretched after I resized it. What happened?

Standard-definition MPEG content is frequently anamorphic: the stored frame is 720x576 but it is meant to be displayed at 16:9, which the file signals through a pixel aspect ratio. Leaving Video resolution on Keep original preserves that signal. Any explicit resize flattens the pixel aspect to square, so the stored shape becomes the displayed shape. The fix is to choose Width x Height and type the dimensions you actually want to see, for example 1024x576.

Should I use Constant Quality to control the output?

No. On MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 the Constant Quality value is discarded and the encoder is handed a resolution-derived minimum bitrate instead, because these codecs have no CRF mode. Constant Bitrate, Variable Bitrate and Specific file size are the modes that actually change the output. This is the single most common source of "I changed the setting and nothing happened" on MPEG targets.

Does the file get smaller?

Not by default. When File Compression is left on Quality Preset, the preset becomes a multiple of your source's own bitrate, and "Very High" asks for 132% of it — so the output usually grows. Choose Specific file size and name a figure, or drop the preset to Medium or lower. There is also a resolution-dependent floor below which MPEG-2 will not go, so aggressive targets need a resolution reduction too.

What is the difference between this page and the MPG version?

Only the spelling of the output extension. MPG to MPG writes the same program stream under .mpg, which is what DOS-era tools and some authoring software expect. Both pages accept either input extension and offer identical controls. Pick whichever name your downstream tool wants to see.

Will this make my file play in a web browser?

No. No current browser has an MPEG program stream decoder, and the <video> element will not accept one whatever you do to it. Converting to MP4 is the only route to browser playback, and it also cuts the file size substantially in the process.

Can I fix the audio and video sync?

Sometimes. Drift caused by broken container timestamps is usually corrected, because the output is remuxed with fresh PTS and DTS values derived from the decoded frames. Drift baked into the recording itself — a camera or capture card that dropped frames while the audio clock kept running — is not something a re-encode can detect or correct.

How long do you keep my files?

Uploads and the files they produce are deleted automatically after a few hours. They are never shared or made public, and no account, email address or payment is needed.
