MPEG-2 is the DVD- and broadcast-era video standard (ISO/IEC 13818-2, also known as ITU-T H.262), usually carried in .mpg or .mpeg files. MXF (Material Exchange Format) is a professional SMPTE container that wraps the same kind of video and audio together with rich metadata for broadcast and post-production pipelines. Because MPEG-2 is itself a common essence inside broadcast MXF (XDCAM, IMX/D-10), this conversion keeps the MPEG-2 codec while moving it into a delivery-friendly container — useful when a station, server, or non-linear editor demands MXF on ingest.

If the Video Codec stays on MPEG-2, there is no cross-codec transcode, so at a matched bitrate the re-encode stays visually lossless. Re-encoding to another codec (or targeting a smaller file size) can only preserve or reduce quality, never increase it.
OP1a stores all video and audio tracks interleaved in a single self-contained file, which is what most broadcasters and delivery specs (AS-11, IMF-adjacent) expect. OP-Atom stores one essence track per file — separate MXF files for video and each audio channel — which is the layout Avid Media Composer generates and references. If you are delivering to a station or playout server, OP1a is the safer general-interchange choice.
MXF exists for professional pipelines: broadcast ingest servers, Avid and Premiere project workflows, and archival masters that carry timecode and descriptive metadata. For general modern playback it is the wrong tool — MP4 with H.264 is far smaller and plays everywhere. If your goal is sharing or watching the file, use MPEG-2 to MP4 instead.
By default the converter keeps MPEG-2 video essence and uses uncompressed PCM audio, matching the XDCAM/IMX-style MPEG-2 MXF that broadcast systems accept. In our testing, leaving the Video Codec on MPEG-2 produces an OP1a-style wrapper that keeps the same MPEG-2 codec, so at a matched bitrate the picture stays visually identical and the main added size comes from uncompressed audio and metadata.
MXF is a professional container, so consumer players often will not open it directly. VLC plays many MXF files, and any Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere Pro, or DaVinci Resolve install will import it. If you only need to view the footage on a phone or in a browser, convert it back with MXF to MP4 rather than installing pro software.
Usually yes. The MPEG-2 video essence is kept at a matched bitrate, but broadcast MXF wraps it with uncompressed PCM audio plus index and metadata packets, whereas the original .mpg often carried compressed MP2 audio. Swapping compressed audio for uncompressed PCM, together with MXF's header and index overhead, makes the wrapped file somewhat larger even though the picture is unchanged. If file size matters more than broadcast compatibility, keep the MPEG-2 in its original container or convert to MP4 instead.
It produces MPEG-2 video wrapped as an OP1a-style MXF, which many ingest systems accept, but strict delivery specs such as XDCAM HD422, IMX/D-10, or AS-11 DPP impose exact rules on GOP structure, bitrate, frame size, and audio channel layout. This general-purpose converter does not guarantee every one of those profile constraints, so if you are delivering to a broadcaster, check the wrapped file against their required spec before you submit it.
MXF is built to hold timecode, but a plain MPEG-2 program stream rarely embeds the structured start timecode broadcast MXF expects, so wrapping the essence cannot invent a reel or camera timecode that was never recorded. Treat the output as carrying, at most, a default zero-based timecode; if exact continuity matters for your edit, set or confirm it in your NLE after import.
