MPEG-2 is the DVD- and broadcast-era video standard (ISO/IEC 13818-2, also known as ITU-T H.262), usually carried in .mpg or .mpeg files. MXF (Material Exchange Format) is a professional SMPTE container that wraps the same kind of video and audio together with rich metadata for broadcast and post-production pipelines. Because MPEG-2 is itself a common essence inside broadcast MXF (XDCAM, IMX/D-10), this conversion is largely a re-wrap into a delivery-friendly container rather than a true re-encode — useful when a station, server, or non-linear editor demands MXF on ingest.

If the Video Codec stays on MPEG-2, the essence is re-wrapped untouched, so there is no generation loss. Re-encoding to another codec (or targeting a smaller file size) can only preserve or reduce quality, never increase it.
OP1a stores all video and audio tracks interleaved in a single self-contained file, which is what most broadcasters and delivery specs (AS-11, IMF-adjacent) expect. OP-Atom stores one essence track per file — separate MXF files for video and each audio channel — which is the layout Avid Media Composer generates and references. If you are delivering to a station or playout server, OP1a is the safer general-interchange choice.
MXF exists for professional pipelines: broadcast ingest servers, Avid and Premiere project workflows, and archival masters that carry timecode and descriptive metadata. For general modern playback it is the wrong tool — MP4 with H.264 is far smaller and plays everywhere. If your goal is sharing or watching the file, use MPEG-2 to MP4 instead.
By default the converter keeps MPEG-2 video essence and uses uncompressed PCM audio, matching the XDCAM/IMX-style MPEG-2 MXF that broadcast systems accept. In our testing, leaving the Video Codec on MPEG-2 produces an OP1a-style wrapper whose video stream is bit-for-bit the original MPEG-2 essence, so the only added size comes from uncompressed audio and metadata.
MXF is a professional container, so consumer players often will not open it directly. VLC plays many MXF files, and any Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere Pro, or DaVinci Resolve install will import it. If you only need to view the footage on a phone or in a browser, convert it back with MXF to MP4 rather than installing pro software.
