If you are converting old MPEG-2 (.mpg / .mpeg) video to RMVB, it is worth pausing first. RMVB is RealNetworks' RealMedia Variable Bitrate format from the early 2000s — its draw was small file sizes over slow connections, mostly for Asian-market movie and TV downloads. Today almost nothing plays .rmvb without a third-party player or codec pack, and H.264 in an MP4 container delivers better quality per byte and near-universal playback. Convert to RMVB only when a specific old player or device requires it; otherwise convert MPEG-2 to MP4 instead. This tool produces real RealVideo RV10/RV20 streams either way.

It only shrinks the file — re-encoding cannot add detail that the MPEG-2 source never captured. RMVB's variable bitrate can produce a smaller file at similar perceived quality, but every transcode loses a little. If your goal is a small, high-quality file, H.264 in MP4 reaches a smaller size at the same quality than RealVideo RV10/RV20.
RealNetworks' later codecs (RV30 and RV40) are proprietary and were never released with an open-source encoder — open tools can decode them but cannot create them. The widely available encoders are RV10 and RV20, which are H.263-based. That is what this converter writes into the .rmvb container, along with the audio codec you choose (RealAudio 1.0, AAC, or AC3).
VLC plays most RMVB files on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and KMPlayer or the original RealPlayer can open them on Windows. macOS, iOS, and Android do not play .rmvb out of the box, and smart TVs, consoles, and modern editors almost never support it. If broad playback matters, convert to MP4 rather than RMVB.
For new content, no — it is effectively a dead format. Its one advantage, small VBR file sizes, has been surpassed by H.264 and H.265, which compress better and play everywhere. The honest use case for RMVB now is feeding a specific old player or matching an existing RealMedia collection. For anything else, MP4 is the better target.
Yes. Leave Video resolution on "Keep original" and the output keeps the source dimensions; only the container and codec change. You can still trim the clip or cap the file size independently. Note that MPEG-2 broadcast and DVD sources are interlaced — if motion looks combed in your RMVB output, that interlacing came from the source.
Both are RealNetworks RealMedia containers built on the same structure; the split is the bitrate model. A plain .rm was tuned for constant-bitrate streaming over dial-up and early broadband, while .rmvb — the variant this page outputs — uses variable bitrate, spending more data on busy scenes and less on static ones, which made it popular for locally stored films and TV in the mid-2000s. If your legacy system specifically expects the constant-bitrate .rm, use MPEG-2 to RM instead.
