MPG is an MPEG program-stream container — usually MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video with MPEG Layer II (MP2) audio, the kind of file VCDs, DVDs, and older capture cards produced. RMVB (RealMedia Variable Bitrate) is a legacy RealNetworks container that needs RealPlayer or an FFmpeg-based player such as VLC. Converting MPG to RMVB is a niche, backward-looking move: you are trading a still-widely-readable MPEG file for a near-dead format. Do it only when a specific RealPlayer workflow or a RealMedia-organised archive genuinely requires .rmvb. For everything else — phones, browsers, smart TVs, modern editors — MPG to MP4 is the right target.

Most mid-2000s .rmvb fan-sub and download releases used RealVideo 4 (RV40). FFmpeg — the open-source engine behind this and most online converters — ships decode support up to RV50 but only includes open-source encoders for RV10 and RV20, the two earliest H.263-based RealVideo codecs. That is why the converter exposes RealVideo 1.0 (RV10, the RealPlayer 5 codec) and RealVideo G2 (RV20, RealPlayer 6) rather than RV40. The output is genuine RMVB and plays in RealPlayer and VLC, but it is encoded with an older RealVideo than a period RV40 rip. RealNetworks itself moved away from the consumer codec business after selling 190 patents and its next-generation codec software to Intel for $120 million in a deal completed April 5, 2012, so the format has seen no mainstream development since.

The free, cross-platform VLC media player plays RMVB on every desktop because it bundles FFmpeg's RealVideo and RealAudio decoders; MPlayer, Media Player Classic, and PotPlayer also work. Phones, smart TVs, web browsers, and most video editors do not recognise RMVB at all — which is exactly why MPG remains the more portable file of the two.
RealVideo 1.0 (RV10) or RealVideo G2 (RV20), both based on the H.263 standard. These are the only two RealVideo encoders available in open-source FFmpeg — the later RV30 and RV40 codecs (used in most mid-2000s .rmvb releases) have decode support but no open-source encoder. RV10 shipped with RealPlayer 5 and is the safest pick for very old builds; RV20 (RealPlayer 6 onward) compresses a little more efficiently.
Not reliably. MPG's MPEG-1/MPEG-2 video is already a constant-or-variable-bitrate codec, and RealVideo RV10/RV20 are roughly contemporary in efficiency — both sit well behind H.264. RMVB's variable bitrate can trim size on long, simple footage, but you usually save far more by dropping the resolution preset (to 360p or 480p) than by the format change itself. If shrinking the file is the actual goal, compress MPG or MPG to MP4 with H.264 will give a better size-to-quality result.
Some, yes. Converting re-encodes the MPEG-1/MPEG-2 video into older RealVideo and the audio into AAC or RealAudio Cook, and re-encoding between lossy codecs always discards a little detail. It cannot add quality that was not in the source MPG. Encode at a high quality preset and a sensible bitrate to keep the loss small, and treat RMVB as a delivery target for a legacy player rather than an archival or editing format.
Both are RealNetworks RealMedia files. Plain RealMedia (.rm) was tuned for constant-bitrate streaming; RMVB adds a variable bitrate (the "VB") aimed at locally stored files, spending more data on complex scenes and less on simple ones. If your target needs the constant-bitrate variant instead, use the MPG to RM converter.
No. RMVB is legacy. RealNetworks introduced the variable-bitrate RealMedia extension around 2003 and stepped back from the consumer codec business after the 2012 Intel patent sale; the format is now largely superseded by MP4 and modern web codecs. It survives in existing file collections and on a handful of older players rather than in new content. For a future-proof copy, convert MPG to MP4 instead.
Your MPG is uploaded over an encrypted (TLS) connection, transcoded on our servers, and the RMVB file is returned for download. Uploaded files are deleted automatically a few hours after conversion — never shared or made public, no sign-up, no watermark. In our testing, the main practical limit on a large MPG is upload time rather than the conversion itself, so trimming or lowering the resolution before a long upload often helps more than any codec setting.
By default the audio is re-encoded to AAC, which pairs with the RealVideo RV10/RV20 output; RealAudio 1.0 (Cook) is also available if an older RealPlayer build expects the classic RealAudio track. The MPG's original MPEG Layer II (MP2) sound is decoded and re-encoded either way, so re-encoding discards a little detail — pick a sensible bitrate to keep the loss small. For playback in RealPlayer or VLC, the AAC default is the safe choice.
