How to Convert OGA to M4R Online

  1. Upload Your OGA File: Drag and drop the .oga file onto the page or click "+ Add Files". It does not matter whether the Ogg audio inside is Vorbis, Opus, FLAC or Speex, and you can queue several files at once.
  2. Trim to 30 Seconds or Less: Open Trim, type the Start time of the passage you want and a Duration no longer than 30 seconds, in seconds or HH:MM:SS.sss. The note under Duration repeats Apple's 30-second guidance for iPhone ringtones.
  3. Set the AAC Bitrate under File Compression: Use Constant Bitrate for a fixed rate between 8 and 384 kbps, Variable Bitrate for one of five AAC bands (20k-32k up to 96k-112k), Custom Bitrate for a figure you type, or Specific file size to aim at a size. Quality Preset leaves the choice to the encoder. Set Audio Channel to Mono for voice recordings.
  4. Convert and Download: Click "Convert" and save the .m4r. The file is uploaded over HTTPS, encoded on our servers and deleted automatically after a few hours. Free, with no sign-up and no watermark.

What an OGA File Is

.oga is the extension Xiph.Org gives to audio-only Ogg files, registered alongside the audio/ogg media type in RFC 5334 (2008). The container is the same Ogg format used by .ogg files; the different extension simply announces "audio, no video". What makes OGA interesting for a ringtone is that the extension says nothing about the codec inside. An .oga can hold:

  • Opus, the most common case today. Voice messages saved from Telegram often come out as .oga files with Opus inside, and some Linux recorders and audio tools write Opus-in-Ogg with this extension.
  • Vorbis, the classic Ogg music codec, used by open-source software and some web audio.
  • FLAC, lossless audio in an Ogg wrapper, occasionally found in archives and sound libraries.
  • Speex, an older speech codec from the VoIP era, found in old voicemail and call-recorder exports.

The iPhone accepts none of these as a ringtone. It wants an .m4r: AAC (AAC-LC) audio in an MPEG-4 container, which is the same container and codec as an .m4a with an extension that tells iOS, Finder and iTunes the file is a tone. This page decodes whatever the OGA holds and encodes a fresh AAC track, so you do not need to find out the inner codec first. It is still worth knowing, because it tells you which settings make sense.

Android phones do not need M4R at all; Android ringtones are usually MP3 or OGG. If you are moving the sound to an Android phone, OGA to MP3 is the simpler route. Files with the .ogg extension use OGG to M4R, which produces the same result.

OGA vs M4R: Format Comparison

Property OGA M4R (iPhone ringtone)
Container Ogg, audio-only extension (RFC 5334) MPEG-4, the same container as M4A
Codec inside Opus, Vorbis, FLAC or Speex AAC-LC
Compression Lossy (Opus, Vorbis, Speex) or lossless (FLAC) Lossy
Typical content Voice messages, open-source audio, sound archives Ringtones and text tones
Typical length Any Up to 30 seconds, per Apple
Offered as an iPhone ringtone No Yes, once added to the phone

Settings by What Is Inside Your OGA

Inner codec What it usually is Audio Channel AAC bitrate to try Size for 30 s
Opus Telegram voice message, recording Mono 48-64 kbps ~180-240 KB
Speex Old voicemail or VoIP capture Mono 32-48 kbps ~120-180 KB
Vorbis Music or sound effect Original 128-192 kbps ~480-720 KB
FLAC Lossless music or sample Original 192-256 kbps ~720-960 KB

Sizes are bitrate × seconds ÷ 8, so 192 kbps for 30 seconds is 720 KB before a small container overhead. Speech sources gain nothing from high bitrates; a FLAC source is the one case where a generous rate is worth it, because there is no earlier lossy encode limiting the result. Media players such as VLC show the codec of an OGA under their codec or media information window, and ffprobe prints it on the first line of the stream list.

Setting the Ringtone on Your iPhone

The usual ways to get the .m4r onto the phone: connect the iPhone to a Mac and drag the file onto the iPhone in the Finder sidebar (macOS Catalina or later), or use iTunes on Windows. Apple also documents a phone-only route: save the file in Files, import it into GarageBand, then Share > Ringtone (Apple Support). Then choose it in Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone (Apple iPhone User Guide). For a single caller, open their card in Contacts, tap Edit and pick Ringtone or Text Tone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know whether my OGA is Opus, Vorbis or FLAC?

Not to convert it; every inner codec decodes here and comes out as AAC in the M4R. Knowing it helps you choose settings: voice-grade Opus or Speex wants Mono and a low bitrate, while Vorbis or FLAC music deserves a higher one.

How long can an iPhone ringtone be?

Apple's article "Create a custom ringtone on your iPhone" says ringtones can be up to 30 seconds long, and GarageBand shortens longer ones automatically on export. The GarageBand for iPhone User Guide also gives 30 seconds as the maximum exported length. Some older guides quote 40 seconds; that figure comes from the iTunes era and is not in Apple's current documentation, so stay at 30 seconds or less.

Can a Telegram voice message become a ringtone?

Yes. Save the voice message from Telegram, upload the .oga here, trim it to the words you want and convert. Set Audio Channel to Mono, since voice messages are mono, and keep the bitrate modest. The result will sound like the original message did, because a messaging-grade recording cannot gain detail in conversion.

Will I lose quality?

From Opus, Vorbis or Speex you are converting one lossy format into another, so a small amount of extra loss is unavoidable, though it is hard to hear on a phone speaker at a sensible bitrate. From FLAC-in-Ogg it is a single, clean lossy encode from a lossless source.

Is an M4R just an M4A with another name?

The audio and container are the same: AAC in MPEG-4. We write M4R with the same MPEG-4 muxer as M4A, and ffprobe shows AAC LC in an MP4 file with major brand M4A . The extension is what makes iOS treat it as a tone. For a regular music file, use OGA to M4A.

My M4R is longer than 30 seconds. Do I have to start again?

No. You can shorten an existing ringtone with Trim M4R, which lets you pick the start and end on a waveform. Re-converting the OGA with a shorter Duration works just as well.

Can I convert a ringtone back to OGA?

Yes, M4R to OGA does the reverse, for example to use an iPhone tone on a Linux desktop or an Android phone.

What happens to my files after conversion?

They are uploaded over an encrypted (TLS) connection, converted on our servers and deleted automatically a few hours after processing. Nothing is shared or published, and no account is required.
