OGV is an Ogg container holding Theora video — an open, royalty-free format that the web has largely moved on from. MPG is an MPEG program stream that almost any media player, legacy editor, or hardware DVD device opens without extra codecs. Converting OGV to MPG frees a Theora clip into a universally readable container; it is a lossy-to-lossy re-encode, so it will not improve quality, but it makes the file play where Theora no longer does. For modern web or device playback, WebM or MP4 are better targets — pick MPG specifically for older MPEG-based desktop players and editing workflows.

VLC, MPV, and other Ogg-aware players still open OGV directly, and Firefox historically played it in-page. But native support is fading — Chrome disabled Theora by default in version 120 (December 2023) and removed it in version 123, and Windows and macOS have never bundled Theora codecs. Converting to MPG produces an MPEG-1/MPEG-2 program stream that legacy desktop players, DVD-authoring suites, and older editors open without installing anything extra.
Some, yes. Theora is already a lossy codec, and re-encoding it into MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 is a second lossy pass, so a little detail is discarded and nothing is recovered. Because MPEG-2 is less efficient than Theora, you generally need a higher bitrate just to break even. Keeping the Quality Preset on "Very High" or higher minimizes the visible loss; lowering it to save space is where blockiness appears.
Choose MPEG-2 for almost everything: it is the DVD-Video codec, supports higher bitrates and interlaced video, and looks clearly better than MPEG-1 above standard-definition bitrates. MPEG-1 tops out around 1.5 Mbps and is mainly useful for very old players or Video CD-style targets that explicitly require it. On this converter MPEG-2 is the default video codec, paired with MP2 audio.
For modern playback, usually yes. WebM (VP8/VP9) is the open-web successor to Ogg Theora and plays in current browsers, while MP4/H.264 is the most universal modern format for phones and editors. Choose MPG only when something specifically needs MPEG-1/MPEG-2 — a DVD-authoring tool, a hardware DVD player, or a legacy editor. If your goal is web or device playback, convert OGV to WebM or convert OGV to MP4 instead.
The audio is preserved as content, but it is re-encoded, not copied. MPG (MPEG program stream) cannot carry Vorbis, so the converter transcodes your OGV's Vorbis track to MP2, the standard MPEG-1/2 audio codec, by default. The result stays in sync and audible; it is just a fresh lossy audio encode rather than a passthrough of the original Vorbis stream.
Expect it to grow rather than shrink. In our testing, a short standard-definition Theora clip re-encoded to MPEG-2 at the "Very High" preset came out noticeably larger than the OGV source, because MPEG-2 spends more bits to match the detail Theora packed more efficiently. Lowering the Quality Preset closes the gap, but at the cost of picture quality. If you need a smaller file in a modern format instead, target MP4 and then compress the result.
