This is for people with a specific destination in mind: a DVD burn, a set-top box, a kiosk player, a broadcast deck or an old editing suite that will accept an .mpg and nothing newer. It walks through the settings that actually change the result on a RealMedia source — which is a shorter list than the options panel suggests — and it is blunt about the two places this conversion behaves unlike a modern one. If your destination is a phone, a browser or a TV made this decade, RM to MP4 is the conversion you want instead.

Nothing is lost by the resampling — you cannot lose detail by going up — but MP2 spends 160 kbps to carry an 8 kbps speech track, and AC-3 spends 96 kbps. If the destination is a general-purpose player, MP3 is the efficient pick. If the destination is a DVD pipeline, stay on MP2 or AC-3, because those are the codecs DVD-Video authoring tools expect and the extra bytes are the price of compliance.
The second thing to know is that the frame rate may move. MPEG program streams only permit a fixed set of rates, so an unusual RealVideo rate is snapped to the nearest legal one and frames are duplicated to fill. A 7 fps sample tested here came out at 7.49 fps with four duplicated frames; a 30 fps sample passed through unchanged.
.ram or .rpm file is normally a one-line text file holding a http:// or rtsp:// address; open it in a text editor and if all you see is a URL, the actual .rm lives elsewhere.If nothing in your chain actually requires MPEG, it is a poor trade. Measured on a 528,425-byte RealVideo 3.0 sample at 320×240:

H.264 was both smaller and measurably closer to the source. So reach for MPG when a DVD authoring tool, a set-top box, a broadcast system or a legacy editor demands it — and reach for RM to MP4 or RM to MKV for anything else. For audio-only rescues such as lectures and interviews, RM to MP3 skips the video entirely.
.mpg different from .mpeg?Only in the filename. Both are written through the same MPEG program-stream muxer with the same default codecs, so the output is produced identically; .mpg is the three-letter form that survived DOS filename limits. Use whichever your destination software insists on — RM to MPEG is the same conversion under the longer extension.
Almost. DVD authoring tools expect MPEG-2 video at 720×480 for NTSC or 720×576 for PAL, with LPCM, MP2 or Dolby Digital audio. Set the frame size in the Width × Height fields rather than picking a resolution preset, since presets set height only. Then hand the .mpg to authoring software such as DVDStyler, which builds the VOB and IFO structure the DVD-Video specification requires — that structure is not something a single .mpg file contains on its own.
Only if the DVD pipeline demands it, and expect no improvement in detail. A 320×240 RealVideo frame stretched to 720×480 is still 320×240 worth of picture with more pixels drawn around it — and it costs real bytes: the same sample that produced 1,910,784 B at its native 320×240 produced 2,473,984 B once resized to 720×480 at the same bitrate.
Yes. The decode happens on our servers on the FFmpeg/libavcodec lineage, which documents decoder support for RealVideo 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 6.0 plus the RealAudio family. Nothing needs installing at your end; upload the .rm as it is.
RealMedia is RealNetworks' proprietary streaming container — every one starts with the four-byte signature .RMF. Inside are a RealVideo track and usually a RealAudio track. The Library of Congress format registry describes it as proprietary with little public documentation, widely adopted for web streaming from the mid-1990s, which is exactly why converting it while working decoders exist is a good idea.
Barely, at RealMedia frame sizes. At 320×240 and the same bitrate the two scored 0.9368 and 0.9361 SSIM against the source. Keep MPEG-2, the default, for DVD players and anything from the DVD era forward; pick MPEG-1 only if you are targeting genuinely old hardware such as a Video CD workflow.
Yes, using Trim on this page — a start time plus a duration, applied to the source so you are not paying to encode footage you will discard. If you would rather trim visually and then convert, Video Cutter handles the source clip first.
